2005 320iSE - Brake Discs lipped & corroded
My mum's car has been into the BMW dealership today for a spark plug service and vehicle check service.
They noted that both front brake discs are lipped and the near side rear disc is heavily corroded. Cost quoted to fix = £721 + VAT! The car has a full BMW SH and an extended BMW Insured Services Named Components Warranty. I presume discs are not covered? Should they be in that state after 63,000 miles? If not a warranty/ goodwill issue, could I get an indie specialsit to fit BMW discs without affecting the warranty? Thanks in advance. |

Six years and 63,000 miles is a good return from a set of discs. Really could not be classed as anything other than wear and tear.
I'd hope the extended warranty would not force you to have the brakes done as they are not part of a service. Mega posted a few weeks ago about brakes he bought for his 320d and I'm sure he was around £200 plus fitting. |

Yes....use an indie to do this routine work. They've lasted well!

I recently replaced front disks on my '05 car at 45k miles in prep for the MOT. Thickness was getting close to min but worse was that the inside faces were starting to flake off, probably due to the heavy salting during the last 2 winters. No issues, they were past it.
I bought Pagid branded parts from ECP, costing around £150 delivered including new sensor using an ECP discount code found on google. BMW branded parts will cost more, and the fitting charge could be a couple of hundred £s, but still the dealer quote sounds rather high, IMO. Last edited by I6Touring; 09-07-2011 at 05:36 AM.. |

Brakes International are cheap and perfectly fine quality.
EBC have a nice plating that prevents corrosion.

I'm a bit confused.
I thought that when you had a BMW extended warranty you had to have all your maintenance performed by an authorised BMW garage or the warranty was invalidated. Thus, the brake pads and disks will need to be changed by a BMW garage, particularly since the BMW service record will have that info. Unless of course you go to another garage since I don't believe service history is kept centrally. David |

Just buy OEM parts and you'll be covered.
rear discs are 100 or so rear pads are 70 or so.. tops. wear sensor is 15 quid tops Then get them fitted. 90 mins effort if you can do it yourself (I am in no way mechanical but followed a 'how to' guide from an E46 which was exactly same on E90.. job done) less than an hour if you've done it before. Only thing to take care of is the retaining lug on the disk.. if it doesn't turn straight away then soak it in WD40 and get a heat gun on it for a few minutes. You don't want to cheese the head and have to drill it out! Even if you ignore me.. Go to an independant to get this done: Don't pay 800 for a bloody brake service that is daylight robbery HTH Dave

It's Insurance so any reason not to pay will be exploited. I still think you will be running a risk not having this done by a dealer - get a price from an independent and see if the dealer will match it - they often will. I don't know where you live too and if you have a choice of dealers withing a reasonable distance, but assuming this is your local one, your 'card is marked' now so as to speak. As others have said - you have had more than your money's worth out of the current discs. Last edited by Falmouthboy; 09-08-2011 at 10:36 AM.. |

I fail to see how fitting consumables like brake wear parts can invalidate a WHOLE waranty.
Sure, if the brakes discs crack then no dice, but any isurer would have a seriously hard time a/ noticing the discs are not oem b/ proving they contributed to a DPF packing in or a window motor failing (etc)

True but its their policy and they can put any conditions they want. I nearly got hit with same problem when I got my oil changed in between services. The indie was going to stamped the book and that would have cost me the warranty if the dealer spotted it. Luckily we managed to avoid it its just another way to make money for bmw

My car is hugely modified and I just accept any part I modify will no longer be under warranty. That hasn't stopped BMW working on the car via extended warranty in fact for the past 2 years running I've had something close to 5k of work done per year on the car under the warranty with not even the smallest question over the car or inclination they might not pay etc.
Anyway, AFAIK With the BMW warranty: The dealer gets paid regardless. So it's in their best interests to take on the work as they can make a profit on labour for warranty work still. Unless you act like an asshole in which case they might choose to stick you just to prove a point.

My car is far from stock and I never experience any problems with my dealer. I've had various things done under warranty, and I've also had instances where BMW have refused to do work as the problem part was not stock, but at no time was there ever a suggestion that my warranty was at risk. I'd never get my brakes done at BMW,nor would I necessarily use OEM parts, I would however insist on quality parts and that those parts were recognised as such. I reluctantly get the brake fluid changed by BMW as that is covered as a serviceable item, and would get a stamp in the book. There are far too many internet tales of dealers threatening to void warranties or having done so,for all sorts of reasons, I have never read a factual case of this having happened though! It's the same with Insurance, loads of tales of insurance being voided for any number of reasons, but nothing factual.

Get a quote for the work from an independent company (using BMW parts). My local dealer (Rybrook) have a sign outside the dealership saying they will match the price form any independent garage.
So take your quote to your dealer and ask then to match it. |
