Reading it though I can't see how they could make you change the whole unit if one of the LED's was not working - surely you would still have light on that side of the car (as it the benefit of LED's whereby one failure means the light is still functioning) The same would apply to tail lights otherwise you'd have thought if one LED was out.

Rich.

I cannot for the life of me see why these are now mandatory - are side lights and normal headlights (xenon too) not good enough these days. Worlds gone mad.

+1..who would have thought that the Audi LED would catch on like a house on fire..now everyone is at it. Even your Hyundai or Kia.

At least the Audi's look like they're part of the car, so many now look like Halfords add-ons.

Yes...prefer the Audi DRL headlight LED to the Merc foglight LED..the one on the Merc just look like Halford DIY. Each to their own i supposed.

It's doesn't say that if one of the LEDs fails, you have to replace the unit

It says that where the LED DRL unit fails and is part of the bigger lighting cluster (say the headlamp unit) then you would be forced to change the whole unit out as there is no way to just fix the faulty LED component.

DRLs used to be called fairy lights.

A car is no place for a fairy light.

Of course on all these cars, you can switch them off.

Whilst the EU might have dictated they have to be fitted, I have yet to see anything in the UK (different in other countries) that says you have to use them.

It specifically mentioned bulb failure and you might have to replace the whole unit if you can't replace the bulb.

These units, as we see it, will be sealed in manufacture so if an LED light was to fail, it will almost certainly be impossible to just replace the bulb. Instead the motorist will have to replace the whole light assembly

Makes you wonder just what the new 3 series is going to have on it

You would like to think bright halos like on the 5 but I have a nasty feeling it will be something all together different.

I saw new reg buses in London with them on! WTF! Can't really see the rationale behind having the DRL as a must have MOT item in the future..lets face it..apart from the ones on the Audi and the LCI BMW's angel eyes DRL..the "foglight" LED on the Merc and gang are barely bright enough to attract the attention of the oncoming vehicles And not to mention they look tacky.

Most LEDs have an MTBF of between 100,000 (>11 years continuous use) and 1,000,000 hours though, so they're not something most people are going to have to worry about replacing. Yes, they're potentially expensive if they do die, but I suspect the vast majority that do pack up will do so quite quickly as it'll be a manufacturing fault, so will be covered under warranty.
