My mechanic, who specializes in BMWs, said that BMW rotors tend to be thin and that they should be replaced every time the pads are replaced. Is this what most people do?

+1..the one thing you shouldnt do is resurface them..they are a replace.

a lot of people believe that and it does hold true sometimes.

the minimum thickness is stamped on the rotor itself, measure it with calipers and see if its close to being out of spec. you have to allow for more wear with the new set of pads.

He is right, they are not meant to be resurfaced.

BMW rotors are not recommended to be cut...they are to be replaced...sure you can resurface em..but its not recommended

Algebra question:

If the stamped minimum thickness for the rotors is X mm and I measure the rotors out to be X + Y mm, for what values of Y would it be okay to change just the pads and keep the rotors?

Yes you can change just the pads as BMW does for most customers near 50k with worn out pads. However , down the road and before the pads wear out you will need new rotors.

SO - rule of thumb -- change the rotors and pads together. DIY

If you use an apparatus like this and find that the run out exceeds +/- 3.. they should be replaced. I'm currently at about +/- 1 and all is well (no vibration or sound during braking).
