M1 in daily driving
I have been with my D for only a week... keeping in manual sport mode as long as I can hold out.
What is the purpose of M1 in daily driving? The car never goes there in either Sport or D modes. Or is it? When in manual mode, should I just launch in M2 for daily driving? My question is for the 335d specifically. Since it has so much torque.

It allows you to shift the car manually if you so choose; you know in an effort to satisfy that "uge." If you start in M1 or M2 you need to up-shift or eventually the car will shift by itself when it reaches redline and likewise if you don't down-shift when coming to a stop the car will eventually shift down to 1st for you.

So far, I have yet to see it go into M1 in Sport or D modes.

Not sure I follow what you are asking... From what I understand the car starts in 1st (M1) when in D and it starts in 2nd (M2) when in DS. If you are in manual mode and let the car shift by itself during say a drag race then come to a stop it will automatically shift to M1 when you come to a stop.

In DS, it will start from a standing stop in 1st. If in D, it will only downshift to 2nd.
Try this...in D at a stop light, shift over to DS...you should feel a very slight thunk as the transmission shifts down from 2nd to 1st....still stopped, upshift to 2nd with the paddles or the shift lever, and you'll feel the transmission shift again. I feel the car "hunker down" a bit, when it shifts into 1st. Cheers D.

What do you mean in "manual" mode it starts in M2? You select the gear you wish to start in "manual." If you move the shifter to DS the car is sport mode and starts i1n 2nd, if you push the shifter forward you should be in M1, or alternatively pull it back and you're in M2.

When coming to a stop in manual mode, it will always launch you in 2nd. It does not activate 1st in manual mode unless you intervene. |

Sorry to sound so obtuse on this. This is my first auto. Even growing up parents had MTs, so does wife.
So seems that in DS and "Manual- M1,M2,M3...", it only goes to M2 at stop. In D, I guess I never noticed it it go to First gear because its so smooth! also stay in Manual M2,M3. I had a loaner 328 today, and it was more obvious when it started in First gear in D mode. When I got my 335d back and put it in D, it was so smooth and quick! M2 seems like the preferred launching. Its a tall gear allright.

It will not let you stop in a higher gear such as 3rd/4th/5th/6th, because it would be too much of a strain to launch from a stop again. So if you don't intervene and downshift "manually" as that is the mode you are in, the highest gear it will allow you to stop in is 2nd gear. For those of you that are manually shifting through all the gears, just select 1st gear as you come to a stop if that is what you want. I have found the diesel is faster 0-60mph, taking off in 2nd gear anyways. (I got 4.5 sec with the JBD). See my video. And of course if you don't manually shift at redline/etc, the trans will automatically upshift for you.

There are two "manual" modes for those with paddles: 1) in D mode, temporary override of gear selection with paddles...the duration of the override depends on throttle application after the paddle use; and 2) in M/S mode, permanent (until the shifter is returned to D position) activation of manual programming once either the paddle or the shifter is actuated.

I think I got it. It may just be my "technique", and/or lack of Auto-Experience. (Pun intended).
When I start the car, I go straight Down/Left/Down into Sport/Manual Mode. Which goes to M2. I never started the car in D... or even D/S. Either, I'm going to D/S mode and inadvertently "down" quickly to M2. Or going to manual mode goes to M2, skipping M1. Which is why I never saw or see M1. (Unless I go "up" on purpose.) So since I never put it in D or D/S I never noticed the car in M1! D= 1st gear at start of car and at stop(s). D/S= 1st gear on start of car and 2nd at a stop(s)? Manual = M2 on Start and M2 at Stop. ![]()

That's just a manual function within what still remains D. What I stated regards those modes in their standard form, gearstick in D, and gearstick in M/S. In lament terms, manual refers to the function of complete control, as the temporary manual only ensues the functions of the standard D mode, meaning it will start off in 1st, as D would. What the heck are "lament terms"? I've not heard of that expression before. What does it refer to? ![]() |

"layman's terms" I think...
My D, if at a stop, and shifted into M/S will start in 1st, then when I stop next it stays in 2nd. Shifting over to D, then back to M/S at a full stop returns the transmission to 1st. Regards D.

If you're starting on a hill, it will always go to 1st gear. But it shifts to 2nd very quickly.
