Whats wrong with my car?

My car is an e90 n54 with 70k miles on it. I have dci intakes JB+ and raceland downpipes. Recently it startes burning over a quart of oil a week and periodically smokes out the tailpipes. I do here a rattle from the engine but only when i start it up. Could this be the wastegates? any other ideas as far as what could be wrong with my car? it runs fine and is not low on power at all. thanks for the help

Sounds like you could have a blown head gasket. AFAIK, and I am no expert, I don't think you could possibly burn a quart of oil a week thru the turbos without seeing some additional (and very bad) loss of power.

Headgasket would usually be associated with coolant loss. Sounds like the oil seals in your turbos are toast, just like mine. :0)

Replace oil filter housing gasket, top off oil and see if the oil consumption persists. If it does, time to take it to a shop for diagnosis.

^ def check the oil housing, but a quart a week sounds like alot for a leaky oil housing, but still worth checkinng

From the N55 literature, but I thought this may still be relevant for the N54:

Quote:
If a customer complains about high oil consumption and oil is discovered in the turbocharger, it should not be immediately assumed that the turbocharger is defective.

If the oil is present in the fresh air pipe after the introduction of the blow-by gasses then the entire engine should be checked for leaks. Defective gaskets or crankshaft seals may be the cause of excessively high blow-by gas output.

The gasket fixed the oil consumption on my car. Then again my car only has 25k miles.

I guess I'll take it in to the dealer. Should I remove all my aftermarket parts first?

Under warranty = yes
Not under warranty = no

Well, let me clarify a little more than yes and no. Exhaust (excluding DP's), cosmetic stuff, and mods of that nature shouldn't bother your warranty if you still have one, but any engine or performance mods, i.e. Piggybacks or flashes, I would def take them out. If BMW can pin the problem on something that you added to the car, I don't believe they will pay the bill. They have to prove that your mods are the propagator of the issue, but being that your taking it to a shop full of certified mechanics, that probably wouldn't be a stretch for them.

No warranty, no reason to pull things off since you'll be picking up the tab on the parts and labor. Hope that helP's, and GL.

i would still take it back to stock.... if the engine is toast he can apply for a goodwill claim from BMW as long as there are no signs of the car being beat on. most manufactures are actually pretty good about these kind of claims for main drivetrain component failures if you arent TOO far out of warranty

If you're losing oil at the rate of a quart a week, it is most likely not the oil filter housing gasket. I had mine replaced because I was burning a quart every ~800 miles. A quart every week is excessive unless you're driving 800 miles a week.

70k miles is far out of the original manufacturer's warranty....

Thanks for all the help guys I appreciate it. The car is CPO so I believe this should be covered as long as I take the down pipes off and the tune. It's just a hassle. Hopefully they find whats wrong and get it back running well again.

It may be a hassle, but you won't regret it when you see what the bill looks like that you woulda been paying had you not put in the wrench time!!! Good luck, and please let us know what the outcome is!!
