Anyone have ultra bad swirls on their hood?
I have really bad swirls on my hood and trunk but the sides look like glass. Is it possible to get this car looking like new again? I tried a light polish and white pad as the detail shop suggested. At first I thought it fixed it but it seems like the wax I put on just filled the scratches out for a little bit.

Hmmmm you pictures are huge but I can't actually see much. If it's just swirls you should be able to machine polish them out, do you have a porter cable?

Which polish did you use? I don't think a light polish with a white pad will be enough for that, you need to use a little bit more aggressive combination. You should also wash or do an IPA wipe-down after polishing so you know the combination you used was good enough, and inspect it with a light.
P.S. - Make the pictures smaller and re-upload. |

resize the pics....
ultrafina is used for jeweling, not correcting. You are not using the correct polish get something like menzerna powerfinish, or SIP. Or Meguiars D300, 105, or 205 (205 probably wont have enough cut still also get more pads, you need something that will do some cutting as well as some that do polishing. Otherwise you will be there all day getting minimal results. |

I have never used Meguiar's polish before but have had great results with Menzerna especially on harder clear coats. Check out the swirls on my friends Vette that I did. It was really bad. It was all done with a Porter Cable and Menzerna but there were some areas on his car that I could only get about 80% of the swirls out. They were just too much for a PC. I think you should be able to get most if not all of your swirls out with the proper polish, pad and technique.
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=598347 I don't know your experience or skill level so please take this as friendly advice. First you need to find the proper pad/polish combination. Then make sure you are working the polish correctly. Use speed 5 or 6, I usually just always use 6. You need to work the polish slow and/or long enough to break it down. A lot of people don't work it long enough. Check out this page and especially video 2 at the bottom. Watch how he works the polish and how big an area. Hope this helps. ![]() http://www.autogeek.net/dual-action-polisher.html |

M205 is a finishing polish, and as Eric stated, it probably won't have enough cut especially with a white pad. Try M105 on an orange pad followed up by 205 on a white pad. You should prime your pad before using either polish.

I had pretty bad swirls on my Jet Black E92, and used Megs 105 with an orange pad, Griots Garage Orbital. I gotta say it still did not have enough cutting power, had to go over it twice, which still did not get rid of all the swirls. If it is real bad, you may want to go a step above the orange pad and use something like a surbuf pad, I have heard good things about those (and its probably what I should have began with).

order of aggressive to light
POLISHES MENTIONED: 105 SIP POWERFINISH SUPER FINISH 85RD Pads: SURBUF ORANGE WHITE BLACK BLUE I would start out with orange and 105 and see where that gets you, probably 90%+. If this is your DD, and you dont have a solid wash routine, then stick in this area as chasing that last 10% of swirls isnt worth the removal of more and more clear to get the deeper stuff. Instead, focus on glossing the heck out of the car! 105/orange powerfinish/white 85rd black Thats a killer combo, and what I use on probably 90% of the cars that I do. (substitute pads for different defect removal obviously as most of my jobs are in the 90-99% range) |

its not that the DA is not powerful enough, its that you didnt use the correct polishes/pads to get all the defects out. I havent touched a rotary in over 1.5 years and constantly get 95-99% perfection. surfbuf and 105 = a deadly combo, try it out! Its like sanding with 6000 grit paper! |

oh i figured as much!
surbuf and 105 WILL jack up the finish on the black bmw paint, so be prepared for some heavy marring to remove! usually orange and SIP will do the trick, and then 106 and black, or white pad to finish things off...but, I always will hit the car with a black pad and 85rd to finish |
