Just Ordered Pirelli Tyres Through Tirerack
I just ordered new pirelli p zero nero tyres through tirerack in usa
as pirelli does not have my size here in australia because of my 19''rims tyres are bloody expensive here. So cost of these babys is $1250 aud+ taxes here instead of nearly $3000. 255/30/19 $276each 225/35/19 $163each +$215 us shipping.

Thanks, yeah it is satin black and the normal black parts (decal) are matte.
Funny how we got totally different quotes... I priced up tire racks pzero's @ us$410ea + shipping, which would be $1,200 total for 2 rears, so might just get the local ones for $575...or some PS2's or the toyos which are cheaper. Will decide on monday. The KU31 seem to be a reasonable tyre as suggested and are only $250ea, but I need something a little more demanding. |

what about legality and warranty issues? i thought all tires have to be ADR standard, yellow dots etc...dont forget to factor in the import duty of 10% if it is over $1k.

That's not a bad price, the best I could get for P Zero Rosso (which are better than the Nero, apparently) 2x265-30-19"s was $530 each, so your price is just over half of what it would be locally.
Definitely worth considering. As I am considering getting some wheels from the states, perhaps it would it be worth getting the tyres at the same time. |

Correct about DOT numbers - tirerack ask you to agree that you accept whatever DOT numbers and place/date of manufacture appear. My PS2 fronts are Brazilian-made, not Australian DOT approved while my rears are Australian-market suited. I notified my insurance company about purchasing imported tyres - no extra premium, but advisable in case you ever need to make a claim. Similarly, the tyres have a theoretical warranty but I fear there'd be little point bothering to claim if something did go wrong. The final issue is getting them fitted - my local independent was cool to go but two other places flatly refused to consider fitting them on the basis they were 'grey' imports.

thanks for clearing this up John...i've bought rims and car parts from US before with no major issues, but i'm hesitate to buy tires from o/seas because of the insurance policy...we all know what they are like - will find every single crappy lame excuses to refuse a claim!

Now I am thinking of getting the tyres as part of the group buy with the Linea Corse rims (19"8.5 & 10).
I will probably go with the Goodyear F1 Assy. I wonder if I split the shipment will I not have to pay GST? |

If somebody imports a set of something in parts (like 4 wheels or 4 tyres in 2 shipments) and they check up, they may penalise you and ask you to pay duty on this as if it was one shipment.
With my tyres, I ordered my fronts when they wore out and my rears needed replacing around 6000km later so imported them then. In the end it was perhaps $150 cheaper for the 'set' this way - not a huge saving.

ship 1 to your home address; the other to your officemate using your office address; ship another to your parents (if they live in the same city), etc.

just checked the ADRs on wheels and tyres - any DOT (US) or JIL (Japan) approved tyre IS completely legal in Australia. There is recognition that international standards for safety testing and approval apply here in Australia. A very interesting point! |
