Experience with Continental DWS and Hankook V12 EVO?

Hello, planning to get a set of 235/35/19 front and 265/30/19 rear tires in a black friday deal and will be putting them on next spring. I am considering either getting the Hankook V12 EVO summer tires or the Continental Extreme Contact DWS (all season)

Not planning to be tracking with these tires

Anyone currently using these tires can you please share your thoughts on how you like them in terms of ride comfort, road noise, handling in dry/wet roads?

Thanks

I think Continental DW would be more comparable to the V12 evo since they're summers.

I had a set of the Conti DWS on my saab 9-3 aero. Nice tire, smooth & quiet - would buy again.

How is the DW compared to the V12 evo in handling dry/wet road condition??

DWS is ugly as hell. Heard it's quiet. V12 has too soft a sidewall for spirited driving, but comfortable and cheap.

For an ugly tire, they grip very well and provide an excellent ride. I guess I should stare at my tires more to get the proper aesthetic experience.

I wouldn't get DWS unless it best suited my needs, but never for aesthetics. An ugly tire takes away from the car's overall look whether you want to believe it or not, but it's just more important to some than others.

I have a set of winters for winter driving. So I think I am just looking for a set of good tires for spring/summer/fall that's good in both dry and wet rainy condition

BTW, you have a lovely car, but your tire-fetish is a bit strange.

I currently own V12's, but when i was in the process of buying, my tire shop was comparing the DW and V12 for me. V12 is better for daily use, softer side wall and very quiet. 19 inch v12 were quieter than the stock 17 inch RFT and more comfortable too. but the v12 have too soft of a sidewall for my liking
They told me to buy the DW if i track it occasionally. But since i drive spirited, i'm most likely going to buy the DW next time!

If you're a keener like i am and always get your winter tires put on a month before snow, i would stick to the V12 or DW (both very good in wet/ dry). but if you're a person who wait's until the snow is on the ground, i would go for the DWS

Looks like you need a summer oriented tire, counting the DWS out. The Hankook V12 is an excellent introduction into performance tires, but they may outlast the learning curve leaving you with underwhelming tires down the line. If you think you're going to get new wheels, I'd get V12 or Falken 452's. Cheap, stickyish, comfortable.

If you're already set on your wheels, then look into Michelin Pilot Super Sport, Continental DW, Goodyear F1 Assymetric, Yoko S. Drive, Nitto NT555, or Nitto Invo.

of those tires, Michelin PSS is supposed to be the best. The DW gets rave reviews as well, but is older than the PSS. Nitto Invo gets VERY high reviews for comfort and noise. Can't say much for the F1, Nt555, or S. Drive.

Thanks! And yeah, it's probably weird. However, I was trying to say that I'd personally get DWS for function, definitely not for form. Not saying I'd avoid it all together.

Thanks for your advice. I think I will look into DW or Michelin PSS. I already bought a set of 19" wheels so I am just looking for tires.

Thread jack. If you find the DWS on black Friday sale, please let me know. I'm looking for a set in the same size

I have a set of DWS's that I have replaced with the stock RFTs for a year now. Agreed, they are not a true performance/summer tire, however IMO they handle better than the stock Potenza RTF summer tires performance wise. Can't comment on the "uglyness" factor, they seem just fine to me. It's not that often I stare at the treads.

Don't let the "all season" monkier fool you. They perform extrememly well in dry, wet, and light snow as well. If you're in an area that does gets good amount of rain (and occassional snow) in the spring/fall months and you don't track or race your car (no need for ultra high performance), you may be better off with a high performing all season.

Just for reference the stock RFTs I found to be good in dry weather, but only so-so in wet conditions and awful in even light snow.

I would recommend putting on 235/35/19 front and 275/30/19 rear because they are closer in diameter to each other than 265/30/19. Check out this site:

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalcold.html

I have Hankooks on my 18-inch 219M wheels, because:
  • They are inexpensive
  • Great value for the performance
  • High tread wear
Heard everything about soft sidewalls. Unless you plan to track, pay no attention. I pumped my tires to 37psi Front/43psi Rear (BMW recommends 39F/45R) for speeds up to and over 100mph and/or full load, and that eliminates the soft sidewall experience.

Besides, EVERYONE coming from RFT to non-RFT will experience soft sidewall syndrome (SSS) LOL, because the RFTs are so stiff.

This is my second set of Hankooks. If I were to buy new, I would def try the Conti DW summers if you already have a winter set. If not, go with DWS if the winters are not too harsh where you are and you don't want to spring for a winter set.

Both handle extremely well in the wet. Better than Hankook, but I like Hankook because they are less expensive and I get the greatest bang for the buck and I could drift all day without worrying about replacement price. Summer Conti DW have lower Tread wear rating so you will be leaving a lot of DW DNA in the asphalt.

All are quiet and comfortable. I have a set of DWS on my wife's Mercedes E350 4Matic and love the wet capabilities. Looking forward to slogging them through the snow. Sidewalls are a little squishier than Hankooks, though.

G/L with your decision. LMK what you get!

Cheers!

Cant speak highly enough of the DWS in my month of having them. Very quiet, very stable even at high speeds, firm enough yet still compliant and somehow softer then the snow tires I just put on today (blizzaks). Cracks in road and bumps are handled better with the my 235/35/19 and 265/65/19 DWS then on my 225/45/17 blizzaks, at least thats how it felt when I just was out driving them around making sure everything was good.

I say the Conti's, I took them out in ~3" of fresh snow not long after I had them (so basically brand new) but I couldnt break them look and I was trying (without tearing them up obviously). Very good tire.

Thanks everyone for your input, I have placed an order for the Conti DWS based on everyone's comment and what best suit my needs. After almost 100% positive comments on the DWS, I don't think I could go wrong with them.

Thanks again everyone and happy Black Friday

Hey, small hijack, I see this advice alot about pumping up the air pressure but doesn't that cause more wear in the center of the tire or do your tires still wear evenly? I ask cause you had some great advice in my thread about ditching run flats, which I haven't done yet but will after winter.

DWS are amazing tires for all-seasons. I've had them on my 335i for two seasons and now have a new set on M3 for the winter / cold temp months. I can't say enough about them, I was really happy with their performance in Dry, Wet, Snow. They wouldn't stand up well I don't think in daily snow covered roads like in burbs (you should get real snow tires in that case).

GLWB!
