Those of you with experience in powdercoating

The wheels i'm trying to get for a good price are cheapest in chrome... but i don't like chrome. How difficult is it to strip off the chrome plating and powdercoat jet black?

For those of you who are curious, i'm getting Beyern Wolff 19"x 9.5" and 20"x 10.5" wheels. The matte black face with gloss black lip are [on average] ~$120 more expensive per wheel vs chrome. I keep seeing hella-deals on sets of 4 for $2,000 shipped... so if i can save $600 by just getting them stripped down that i'll just do that... i was planning on painting the matte face anyway to gloss black...

anyone with insight in this area?

For chrome i think you could just use aircraft stripper to get it into bare metal.

For powdercoating, u need powdercoating gun, air compressor, oven (cant use for food after powdercoating).

Shop gonna charge 150-200 per wheel.

Something doesn't sound right here...chrome is almost ALWAYS more expensive than painted or even polished wheels, due to the plating process required. You might want to check again for sure. The site I checked showed the black wheels you describe at $100 per wheel less than the chrome wheels.

Aircraft stripper is for paint, not metal plating...

Powdercoating will cost about $150-$200 per wheel according to a shop that our CCA chapter visited a few months ago. You can't powdercoat or do much of anything else over chrome, and stripping it off with abrasive blast would cost extra. From what I saw at the shop, their results are spectacular.

Powdercoating involves an electrical current to attract the powder particles, and it's sometimes tricky to get it to stick to certain angles. Then they put the coated objects in an oven at 400 degrees or more for several hours. Trying it at home would be a waste of time and money - you could buy another set of wheels for what the proper equipment would cost.

I wasn't talking about doing this at home...

cheapest i found PAINTED were here: http://www.nlmotoring.com/beyern-wol...els-s/1558.htm

Chrome i found on ebay AND i found a site on the web yesterday... but can't seem to find it now... O_o

So... i'm thinking i'd spend that same amount taking off the chrome as a new set of painted ones (with matte black face)... but i'd spend more anyway on getting the face of the [already painted] ones, painted.... O_o hell, i may just go with chrome then... lol
