Hello, all you music producers..

I am currently recording vocals from home, but they never sound mixed to my produced beat.

Is someone able to help me in what i need to do to my vocals in order for them to sound mixed. I know i should try abit of reverb and echo

but im having trouble using Compression tools.

I currently use acid and fl studio.

Recording vocals is a tricky thing to do well. It's easy to oversaturate with reverb and overdo digital effects. It also depends on what genre of music you are recording and the effect you are trying to achieve

A quick Google turned up lots of good advice. Check out YouTube for a variety of vids specifically about FL Studio. Also www.gearslutz.com and www.musictechmag.co.uk


With compression you are effectively squashing the peaks and trough so a sound sits well in the mix. You need to be looking at fast attack, slow release and experiment with ratio and threshold. It's a difficult art to master.

How i used to do it was.....

Decent mic with pop-shield into a decent compressor / pre amp into audio interface into computer.

Then add the effects on the vocals and that works.

That's now my mate still records in his studio. He's had quite a bit of success.


My set up hasn't been used for 5 years as work took over my musical ambitions.
But i think i had

AKG1000S mic and a Rode something
Joe Meek pre amp
Motu 842 interface
Logic 6 (that's how long ago it was) on a G4 12" Mac laptop.

Must dig it out over Christmas and sell some of the gear!

id take the compressor of you... ive currently got a yamaha mw10c mixer.. would i have to plug it into that?

I'll try and find exactly what i have. It's 19" 1 unit rack.

I've never used an outboard mixer. I've never seen the need.
