How to add equalizer to hifi system?
I have an aftermarket amp powering my hifi system in my e90. Would like to take care of some equalization problems, dip at 4K, and generally smooth things out. The audio control DQL-8 looks ideal, but looking to spend alot less! What is an economical way to add an equalizer to the system?

Are you sure you have Hi Fi?
What is the year of your car?
Do you have tweeters in the door? What is it you have in your car stock speakers in doors and floors? Which amp? In general you can't get real cheap in these cars and get a good result. The HiFi OEM amp has a built-in EQ curve that may interfere with the DQXS adjustments. But it is doable... |

The fun part is finding one that doesn't have engine noise in your car. I've tested a number of them in my HiFi car, and most of them have RPM-related whine. The A/C is a PITA to tune, too.

I plan on trying out a miniDSP with their DC-DC converter. If you can live with only four channels of tuning it might just fit the bill.

I gave up on it. Wouldn't take enough input voltage, wouldn't give me enough output voltage, and I had engine noise. Great on paper. If they ever make a 12V unit with a switching power supply and the right I/O circuitry...

I already replaced the hifi amp, so no need to worry about that. I am hoping to not spend so much, although that DQXS and several other audio control items look good. There has to be something out there that can take 2 or 4 channels and split them into 6 channels with EQ capability for less than $300. The search continues.

There might be another solution
If you are running the crappy stock speakers that might be the problem or a large part of it right there. Better speakers in the doors might be able to help fill the 4 k gap instead of doing the round about processing approach.
If you would state what exactly you have in your system you might be able to get better help on solving the problem. |
