What is left illuminated inside in the 2008 335xi when its off and locked?
My engine start button is illuminated is this normal?

Yes, it's normal. I have no idea why it stays on for so long (20 to 30 seconds) but it's fine.

The car is basically telling you that you should get back in and turn it back on and go for a rip
