do I need a special cable for usb connect?
I have just collected my new 330d (new to me) today and it is equipped with the 6fl usb interface but when I plug either of my I-pod in I just get a load of jumbled up letters on the track listings eg. qjyfds. Do I need the BMW audio lead to rectify this as I using the white apple usb cable at the momment.

No, your standard Apple cable should work fine.

Never tried tha Apple cable, have always used a BMW one. Certainly in the earlier days of 6FL this was the only option. How old is the car?

IIRC from 10 onwards you just use the Apple USB cable, before then you need the BMW Y cable but the Y cable plugs into the USB and phono ports so not sure why your display is garbled as it should affect the sound worth having a word with the dealer IMHO or at least try a Y cable and see if it sorts it Dont think the age of the iPod matters , I have a very old 30Gb unit that just sits in the car, the only difference between using it and my iPhone is the iPhone changes tracks quicker.

I think the problem is you are scrolling through the hard drive instead of the actual interface, songs are stored in the ipods hard drive as garbled letters to try and stop you easy nicking the songs of them as you dont know what they actually are.
