Daytime Running Lights (Why is the rear lights on?)

Hello Everyone,

I have a 2011 E90 and with Xenon/Angel Eyes. I just noticed today that when the DRLs are on, the tail lights are on as well. I love the fact that the angel lights are on as DRL but I was wondering if there's anyway to turn off just the rear lights? It's not as important but I'm just wondering why the tail lights are on. Usually they are just the front lights.

With iDrive, I can only turn DRL off but that turns off the front as well. Any thoughts? Ideas? Knowledgable answers? Thanks all!

Not completely sure, but if you turn the lights to the off position it turns the rear ones off but keeps the front ones on (if you have DRL enabled on iDrive). On auto, it has both front and rear on.

Nope. On my '11 335i, if I want the front halos working, the read LEDs have to work as well. Off position or not, they work. That's also my issue... There are no options in the iDrive to disable just the tails. If you turn them off, so do the halos go. Unfortunate. Anyone else has this? Is there a way for just the halos to work like the previous models had?

OP, you beat me to this post. I was just gonna bring up the same thing.

Yeah, I went to the garage and tried it on the OFF position and sure enough, the tail lights are still on. Guess coding is the only way so I'll just pretend I like the tails on too for safety.... LOL

its been like this for all the new models and LCIs that were introduced 07 and after. if it has angel eye DRL and LED rear light tubes, the rear tail light tubes stay on during the day too.

I think that if people are dumb enough to hit you during day-time, then day-time lights are no help whatsoever to that regard. Dumb pretend-safety standards in this country, lol.

yep.

cant really see them in broad daylight but in certain situations it will make the rear of your car more visible. like if you're driving towards the sun at dawn/dusk (sun glares into driver's eyes and also casts a shadow on the back of your car) or when going through short tunnels/overpasses.

BMW most likely did it for a distinguishing look than safety though.

EU cars have front AND rear DRL´s on when the knob is on (A) or Off. Up here in Sweden, its the law to have front and rear DRL´s..

EU has even instituted a a DRL law, So its now mandatory on all new vehicles. No biggie for me, Sweden has had laws on mandatory DRL´s/lowbeams since the late 70´s.

I just bought a 330d m sport and have my idrive set to DRL's on, but for some reason it turns on the entire headlight and not just the halo's.
