Even with n54, 6AT, FBO, Meth & 19's, I found traction!!

Mods are in my sig...so ok I'm technically not FBO as I don't have a FMIC or a full exhaust, but regardless, like many of you, getting traction is a major problem when running 19" street tires, especially running meth with the Procede aggressive maps which provide an insane amount of mid-range torque.

Even with trying to launch in 2nd gear from a stop on a warm day, I would loose traction (and a lot of momentum as well) at around 25mph or so. Modulating the accelerator is a lot more difficult than modulating the clutch in a manual transmission for me. My first 335 was a 6MT and it seemed (to me at least) easier to find the sweet spot between a little wheel spin and a lot of wheel spin. With the 6AT, it proved much more difficult. Gearing is at play as well. The 3.08's in teh manual is more forgiving that the 3.46's in the auto.

So, it wasn't one thing that solved my traction issues. It was a combination of three: 1) Procede traction control system, 2) Wavetrack LSD and 3) the right tires (Michelin Pilot Super Sports).

Each of the above have been reviewed at length in this and other forums so I don't need to do that. What I wanted to do was simply share with you that the combination of these three items has done wonders in helping alleviate traction issues for me.

In chronological order of mods, I had the Procede first. The traction control feature was nice but after switching from the 7/29 maps to the 11/01 and 11/25 aggressive maps, traction became a joke. At Willow Springs, I was spinning on the 3-4 shift at over 100 mph. Scary. So I had a Wavetrack LSD installed about a month ago. Obviously a huge improvement, especially cornering. On staight line WOT acceleration, tires would still spin BUT, I no longer would lose momentum.. While accelerating in a straight line, I could feel the tires spinning but also biting at the same time. Spinning in higher gears still occured, but again, no momentum was lost. First gear WOT? LOL.

I was running Nitto Invos (235/35/19 F and 275/30/19R). After 6,000 mile, my rears were running thin. No fault of Nitto, I was hard on them. So last week I picked up a set of Michelin Pilot Super Sports. Between the Procede traction control (setting around 45), the LSD and the PSS, I have done it! Like the Architect with the Matrix...I have created a harmony of mathematical precision.

I may have only 250 miles on the PSS so they are not fully broken in, but wow I can only barely spin in 2nd gear WOT, and I can't spin in 3rd gear at all! Even more impressive is that today, I actually went WOT in 1st gear and didn't just spin...in fact, I got a bit of whiplash when the back of my head hit the headrest as I launched forward like I was on slicks.

It's unfortunate I guess that I had to pay twice as much to solve my traction issues than I paid for the mods that got me into this predicament in the first place. But regardless, I know a lot of you have the same issue so I hope this helps.

With more traction and no wheel slippage and the amount of torque you have, the tranny will be compromised. Be careful with launches from a dig

Good advice and I agree...which is why I am going to try to start launching in 1st gear. I will get some spin but not too much. Hopefully enough to keep the 6AT happy. I don't launch much, certainly no where near some people like hotrod182 and others have done...and their 6AT's held up nicely.

Can I just warn you that once you get a few thousand miles on your PSS then you'll have traction issues again... Lol

good stuff! traction is a great thing. I just resorted to a set of MT et street 2's.....if those dont have traction I give up. Also going in for a new alignment one I figure where these tires will allow me to lower the car. rear camber is huge on traction and handling, finding the sweet spot on that is just as hard.

Excellent progress! yeah, The PSSs are huge step up in traction and quietness from the PS2s that I had before. I don't ricky mine like your car, but it nice to know if I could the car can handle it.

Yep, those pss's are great... Almost ridiculais..... And they last quite long, also because there is less spin...
