Can someone tell me what this means

i was driving and my car cut all power and this red light came on my dash. i turned the car off and it went away and car is fine... what happened?

That means that your car engine is overheating. See attached link to the manual. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29803

Do not use your car while this symbol is displayed in the dash. If you drive your car while overheating, you could damage the engine head gasket and that is a very expensive repair. If you car still have warranty, tow the car to your nearest BMW dealer. I don't know the year of your car, but based in the mileage in the pic I would guess that the water pump failed. You can confirm this by checking if the car has ECU codes. It has happened to many of us lately. Search the forum for "water pump". I hope this help.

Yes, probably water pump. Get the codes read from OBDII port to be sure. Change thermostat at the same time as the water pump. Water pump is pricey for these cars
