I've found my insurance is £450 cheaper with direct line, however they require me to have a tracker fitted.

Can anyone recommend me a cheap company for fitting in yorkshire?

Nope, I bought it new and didn't bother to get one fitted. I didn't think it would make such a difference to the insurance premium!

try Admiral - one of the few that didnt require a tracker - also happened to be the cheapest 2 years ago but have gone up considerably since

Yes, I'm with admiral at the moment. They used to be the cheapest but as you say they've been going up each year.

Now direct line are £450 cheaper than them, but they require a tracker.

When you're budgeting on whether its worth getting it fitted or not, don't count on Direct Line being cheapest next year. They give large introductory bonuses to get your business, but your premium will go up hugely in year 2.
Not saying don't go with them - just make sure the tracker pays for itself in year 1 or you will be out of pocket in the long run

Admiral/Elephant/Bell actually charge me about £100 MORE for having a tracker fitted. I did a quicky Google and it appears as though i'm not the only one that this has happened to!

What is the annuual fee for the Tracker?
Surely more than the extra premium on the cheapest policy?
Why I never bothered with one on any car.

I heard you could get a device that takes a sim card so you can personally track your car 24/7 ( as long as the sim is still active (battery)

Hide it in your car & if it does get stolen I would love to see the look on the peoples face when you turn up to find your car armed with a few tools.... Spanners of course

I think caravaners do this quite alot so cant see why it wouldnt work with a car.

Not gonna help with insurance but if it could be done for say £100 could be worth it.

I went for Smart Track Protector Pro. It's being fitted tomorrow for £199, with the lifetime membership option of £389. So £588 all in, I don't save on my insurance this year, but next year hopefully the savings will start!

Thanks I was going to go with these people but tracker doesn't do a lifetime membership option with their GPS equipment. They do with their VHF only trackers but they only work within a 4 mile radius of a police car, so i've not got much faith in them.

Sorry I thought you wanted a "Tracker" rather than a tracking device.

You might well be right about the Police having a 4 miles signal range, but Tracker themselves have a wider range.

Tracker has a nationwide range, and across Europe. The Police cars do have a 4 mile signal range, but this is more than enough. Where in any town or city would you be more than 4 miles away from any police vehicle.

Also, the main advantage of Tracker is VHF, which means it can't be blocked. All the other trackers on the market such as Smartrack, are GPS/GSM only based, which means they can be blocked if put into an underground carpark or container, or by using one of these...

Do you have coverage in Ireland? and if so approved installers?

worth noting that traker are the only company to provide free trackers to all police forces so your more likely to have the police locate traker

Excuse me for probably being thick -But how many cars are actually recovered and why would you want the car back after some twat has had it away and probably left it in a state?

If you get it early, and most will, it will be in LESS of a state surely?

Or you can wait a few weeks, and possibly get back a badly ragged and dented M3 that is still too expensive to become a total loss.
And be stuck with it.

That is what worries me but in hours!!!! So what percentage of cars are recovered as a result of a tracker install? Not my area but the last threat assessment I browsed the number was exceptionally small.
I think i would rather not see mine again.
Happy to be convinced - never bothered activating any of mine in my cars - maybe I should.
