Oil Leaking
My mechanic that was trying to fix a boost leak says that I am leaking oil quite severely, I go through about 1 quart every 10k miles (to the point it turns on a low oil light)
He is saying that there is oil covering everything on the bottom of the motor, He says there is a defiant leak on the oil filter housing (not sure what seal he is talking about) Just curious if there is multiple places that are frequent leaking areas. Im at 91k Miles, E90 335i is this a common problem? |

Oil filter housing is a common place for leaks on the N54. The coolant tends to eat away at the gaskets in the exchange area. Replace both gaskets at oil filter housing and you should be fine.

I was losing a quart every 700-800 miles, turns out the oil filter gasket was toast at 25k miles. dealer replaced it no cost under warranty, no problems now.

I don't have a warranty, Have any of you guys had a shop replace the gasket, He quoted me 220, which i feel like is expensive.
Can you DIY? Is it hard? Thanks for the quick replies. Quote:
I agree, but I can't be loosing that much oil considering I only have to add a quart every 8-10k miles. The car has 90k miles on it, and I doubt the bottom has ever been cleaned, Im not sure if It has had a leak before that the dealer fixed, I doubt they would clean everything off after fixing the issue. $220 is not bad the intake manifold has to come off to get to one of the bolts for the oil filter housing. It's a good time to clean your valves. |

Interesting...my E92 is 5 1/2 years old now and I've never had to add oil between changes.

Here is a thread that i started that has to do with the gasket and cleaning the valves. If you have an oil cooler then do both gaskets. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ghlight=valves

I definitely use about a quart of oil every 2k miles or less. Dealer insists it is normal to go through a quart every 700 miles and says there is no oil leak.

1 qt / 10K isn't bad. I would highly suggest changing out your oil every 3-5K, especially if you are running the car hard and or using methanol. You can DIY the gasket, it's rather easy but time consuming.

No. Just be careful not to get the coolant/water in the oil when you take the housing off.
