Hi All,

In my infinite wisdom, I took it upon myself to reset the service indicators in my car (as I replaced the cabin air filter, oil, oil filter, brake fluid rotors & pads about 200km ago)

Now, before I get shot down in flames, I did not replace the brake sensors, HOWEVER the OEM pads where replaced by BMW <10,000km ago (front service indicator was showing 47,000km, rears approximately 40,000 (cant remember exactly on the rears) I can only presume that the sensors where replaced at this time also, I believe the OEM pads are expected to have a 50,000km life expectancy?

So, given the basis that the the sensors are a wear down nub that only touches the rotor in the last few mm of pad life, I believe the sensors to be fine, and thus not need replacing (especially as the pads that I removed are essentially "as new")

Sample image of the sensor (from an e46) showing how the sensor does not make contact until well into the pads life:

I have gone through the usual reset service indicators, and have now reset the front and rear brakes 5-6 times to no avail, each time I get the following screen:

(stolen from another post hence MPH)

Soo.. any ideas? most annoying driving around with the handbrake warning light on, and the service indicator telling me I need new pads!

Hi, yupz, I had the same thing when I changed my brake pads and my normal reset attempts wouldn't reset it...some hair scratching days later (thought something was wrong with the handbrake that was causing the brake pad indicator not to reset) found how to reset that indicator after finding a lifesaver youtube video in link below..note that this may not work the first time as in my case but just try again if doesn't and it should reset, clears the brake pad wear indicator and the handbrake warning after rebooting the cars computer. Maybe just do it and check in a few hours or next morning if has reset since needs the cars computer to be completely shutdown to effect a reset.

Also, I would reckon your dealership must have changed the sensors too when changed the brake pads, I did that when changed my brake pads, is a must do.

I had a similar issue, sensor would fail to reset. Wound up being a dodgy sensor, installed a new one and all was fine.

Hi guys, sorry to drag up an old thread, but I changed oil today and wanted to reset the service warning, but when I do the ign on with no start, hold the ODO button for 8 seconds or whatever... I get an 8 page listing of the car's software, VIN, installed modules etc... not any sort of service menu.

At about the 2 second mark of holding the ODO button, the exclamation in a triangle pops up, but if I let go of the ODO button to press the 'BC' button, it simple drops back to the clock/temp screen.

I have an '06 325i non-idrive, any ideas???

Hey guys,

Replaced my rear pads and sensor on the weekend and am having the same issue with not being able to reset the comp. Ive heard if the process is repeated several times that the fault will stick in the system and the car has to be connected to the OBD to get the fault cleared.

Basically mine resets but no new km amount reappears. Instead I get '------'. I reset the front as well to see what would happen and the same occured. Think I've exhausted it being faulty sensors as I know that the front sensor was working correctly prior to resetting.

Whats anyone else's take on this?

I really want to avoid going to Autoclassic.

Cheers
Dan
