I like to use the paddles (even in drive mode) to drop a gear or two just before booting it to overtake. It means you are already in the correct gear and there is no delay caused by the auto fluffing about dropping gears itself. Once the car settles after the overtake, it just goes back into 'D' mode itself and changes back up.

I find this the best way to get close to the 'manual' sharpness I miss.

Anyone else do this?

Most definitely, it seems a bit more civilised than using kick down.

Regards

OK, I have heard enough about the 2008 spec, I want this conversation terminated right now
........from someone who is getting a £40K car with an out of date spec

I only brought it cos they said paddle shift was exclusive ...

Yes, and I use the paddles in D mode to drop down through the gears when coming up to a roundabout. Just as you mention, this avoids the auto being in the wrong gear when you go to accellerate and (almost) feels like driving a manual car.

i am glad i changed to 2008

I am so pleased i visited this site and found about the new spec ,i would have been sick to find out about the new engine and paddleshift on the auto box after spending £35k of my own money ,i know things at bmw are constantly changing but if i had a week 34 build and found that it changed 2 weeks after i bought mine i would have felt robbed so thankyou to every one on here for there input and advice kind regards Paul

Guys, really no need to feel robbed or that you are losing out on something. It is inevitable that they will change the spec at some point in the future. The car you are getting or have now is still a really brilliant car and used values are still high (I think!!!!)
