it's not torque that causes the problem when lugging the engine. ie, in the evo (where that rod came from) you're only make about 150wtq at that point. It's more an issue of the engine being overworked (VE/load is sky-high) while gearing is putting lots force against the engine. Pistons are absorbing the force of a very big combustion explosion, trying to turn the crank, but the transmission isn't letting that happen. In a stock evo x, volumetric efficiency can get up to 400% at that point! The poor rods are stuck in the middle, and that picture is the result. Other cars might have a different weakest link, different load values when being lugged, and different rpm ranges to avoid, but pretty much all engines act like this.
I dont know if anyone's discovered the actual limits of the N54 internals yet... at least the pre-2010 forged ones. They seem pretty dang impressive! That's why i brought it up ![]() |
