oil filter housing gasket leak

when replacing the gasket do i have to drain the coolant or can i do this without having to do a coolant flush also? how many gal of coolant i need? thanks for the help

You can do it with out draining the coolant, but coolant will spill out of the housing and get all over the front of the engine (this was discussed in the DIY). You need to bleed the system anyway because you've opened up the cooling system and introduced air into it.

Just drain out a gallon or so of coolant. That is enough to have the coolant level in the engine drop below the level of the oil filter housing. If the coolant is not that old, drain it into a clean pan, and reuse it by pouring it back into the system through cheese cloth or a shop towel.

It is easiest to handle the oil filter housing when it is empty of coolant and oil, and the radiator hose removed. You will get a better seating of the new gasket if the housing is unrestricted to move (i.e. without the radiator hose attached to it). It doesn't take much more time to drain off the coolant level and detach the hose from the housing, and it make the job much cleaner and easier to do.

thanks alot for the help..i ordered new coolant since it is in fact overdue so i will be draining it out. I will being this prodject this weekend forsure..thanks again
