E90 start up issues
Hi all,
This is my first post so apologies if it's in the wrong place/ already answered. I have a 55 plate e90 that has an occasional start up issue. I put the key in and press the clutch pedal but when I press the start button the car chugs yet fails to turn over properly. It's not the battery as everything lights up fine. A warning symbol lights up which I'm lead to believe is a dsc warning?? After trying a few different things I've noticed that if I fiddle with the DTC button it usually (but not always) starts up. It will drive without any issue and will usually start up each time I start or stop the car for the rest of the day. I've found some threads talking about a dsc repair kit but surely any kind of stability programme wouldn't affect engine start up. As I say, it drives fine once it has started. I have noticed a rough idle noise when I'm in traffic which I'm told is due to my clutch being on it's way out. I'm trying to save the pennies to get that fixed and now I'm getting this issue which makes me think I'm going to need to save for a bit longer!!!! Thanks for your advice in advance. |

What's the mileage on your car mate? My initial thought is the the rough start has nothing to do with dsc because BMWs have a habit of chucking up anything and everything to do with dsc and abs amongst other things when the engine isn't running properly and/or the battery or management system isn't running properly. I don't fully know the specifics of the clutch on BMWs but a rough grating noise at idle is generally a slave bearing not the clutch itself.

Sounds like glow plugs to me.
It affects cold starting, they heat up for a few seconds from cold to aid combustion. Fairly common 'wear' item on leggy diesels and easy to buy and replace. There are normally error codes in the computers 'log' for these kind of things. The chap above is right - getting the DME read for error codes is your first step normally. Steve PS - if you take a look at the top of this forum there are links to 'classifieds' and 'technical'. These type of questions can often get more response in the 'technical' sub forum Welcome - hope you get it fixed.

A couple of years ago I had a 55 plate 320i, which occasionally, would not star,t but was always cured by a touch on the accelerator, as well as the brake.
