Sounds like there aren't a lot of people at these auctions? Are the plates on any reserve or is it just the highest bidder gets it?

Highest bidder takes it.
Taken from another forum. Quote:
You had the likes of Speedy Reg there, (I seen there van). 4 digit plates that went in auction for maybe £850, with fees comes to £1200. I'm assuming they don't pay VAT on those so it may only be £1025 for them really. On there website they stick them up for like £2-4k. My plate cost me £556 with the credit card surcharge (wish I brought cash). A similar number on there is £1300 with fees comes to £1800 so a big saving. |

"Number Plates Dimensions
As of January 2003, changes to the Law mean that all reflective acrylic number plates must conform to specific styles and dimensions, with criteria regulating decoration and extra information. The following dimensions and regulations must be observed: Plate and Font Dimensions: Standard Oblong plate 524mm x 112mm Standard Square rear plate 285mm x 203mm Large Front plate 524mm x 112mm Large Rear plate 533mm x 152mm Fonts must be displayed use the Charles Wright font and are available in standard or 3D. Charles Wright font (per letter) 50mm x 78mm Small letter spacing distance 11mm Large letter spacing distance 34mm The name, trade mark, or other means of identification of the manufacturer, and the name and postcode of the supplying outlet (the company who sells the number plates) must be displayed on the backing plate in the stipulated location. Illegal plates will not be tolerated by the Police. You are not able to alter or misrepresent the letters The following action could be taken against you in you do not adhere to the rules: A fine of up to £1000 The registration number will be withdrawn from use The vehicle will fail its MOT Borders are optional and can be up to 6mm wide. Regional and country flags (including the Euro-symbol) are optional on plates and must be on the extreme left of the display." Although Wiki says different. "The industry standard size front number plate is 520 mm × 111 mm (20½" × 4⅜"). Rear plates are either the same size, or 285 mm × 203 mm or 533 mm × 152 mm. There is no specified legal size for a number plate. For example, the rear number plate of a Rover 75 is 635 mm x 175 mm. However, all number plates must adhere to British Standard BS AU 145d,[2] which must be marked on the plate, along with the name and postcode of the manufacturer and the supplier of the plates."

One thing I'll miss about my last car, since it was a jap import (Integra DC5), it was allowed a smaller plate (both the digits and the plate itself)...
I had the official DVLA rules on it printed out in the glovebox in case some jobs worth copper fancied a crack at me |

Thanks Paul for the confirmation, thats why I said go for standard plate size so no one thinks its small but reduce the font a bit to make it look a bit nicer. There are some online sellers that let you reduce the fint by whatever size you wish and let you add or remove supplier details,BS numbers etc.

If they all have to be the sizes you stated, how do car manufactuers produce oem plates in different sizes eg range rover/ jags etc.??
Dvla site does not state they have to that size. I agree with wiki! Any how, just what i was told so quite happy to be wrong!! |
