Down pipes and emssions

Hey guys, just looking for some clarification... I have a 335xi and want to throw a pair of catless down pipes on with the stock exhaust, but being in the Chicago burbs means emission tests. I have the JB4 which should take care of the error codes, but can anyone confirm if I'll be able to pass odb checks for emission testing?

Thanks.

Pretty sure it's nigh on impossible to pass without cats. Also pretty sure it's illegal/a fineable offense to replace your cat with catless.

Just go through emissions, get cleared, then go catless. Here in MD it's something like emissions every 2 years; that way you get a full 2 years out of it before you have to swap back to stock for another emissions test.

Depends on what they use in chicago, is it a sniffer test or obd test. If its obd, you need a dp fix which will go in your ecu compartment and fool the obd scanner.

If its a sniffer and you only have the secondary cats gone which are part of the dps, you might still pass with the primary cats still on the exhaust.

The primary cats are on the downpipes. The secondary cats are on the midpipes.

I have no idea whether a car would pass a sniffer test with only the secondary cats.

+1

in IL, you'll need a DPFIX to pass emissions. you'll also need to turn off autoclear on the jb4

I have been told you can pass a sniffer test with only secondary cats. I have a BMW PE which doesn't delete the secondary cats. I have VRSF DP's in hand but I am going to wait until I do my inspection in May to install them. Don't even want to take a chance yet. I'll find out next May.

The JB4 autoclears the CEL but does not actually check for readiness. In order for you to pass an OBII inspection, you will need to have a downpipe fix installed.

Perfect, we do ODBII checks every other year and just didn't want to have to keep swapping pipes. Thanks for the info, now just have to find the right set

We have had people pass emission with our catless down pipes with secondary cats... I guess it just depends on how strict it is out there in Chi-town.

i passed sniff test with stock midpipes cats and high flow midpipes cats twice with catless AR dps .
as mentioned depends on how strict they are .
They dont test however for readyness , only obd codes.

Question

Were these emission tests sniffer based or just the OBD scan?

What mode do you have to be in to get the OBDII scan? If you switch it back to bypass mode does the DPFix in the JB4 still work? And according to my understanding of what someone posted, the JB4 DPFIX only clears the codes, but doesnt do the same thing as the separate DP FIX...? (is that true?) Does the DPFIX actually change the readiness in the DME for Cats?
