Why Two Different 'Coin Cups'?

Hi all!

I wanted to know why BMW used two different coin cups in the front centre console on the E92/93? One is rectangular and the other is almost round/oval, about the same shape as an iDrive knob but in models without iDrive it was only a rubber lined recess, I know as I have this style.

Anyway, my friend will carbon wrap me a whole set of trims however, the coin cup he has is the rectangular type and not the round/oval kind I currently have, can I still fit these to my car?

Pics of what I mean (forget one is RHD and other is LHD)...

Oops, re-read this.

I've never seen an idrive controller shaped coin tray. Weird!

Pics!

wow must be a preLCI thing. I have E90 LCI and the top picture is what I have as no Idrive. then when you get idrive your facia shoudl look similar to the bottom pic.

Must be different on E92/3s where it was just one design and and either a cubby or idrive controller went it.

If memory serves right for E93 though the facia needs to also have the roof open button as the last hole before the armrest

Thanks magic, I'm most confused. Yeah you're right, E93 does have roof controller so front centre console is E93 specific, I just wondered about the coin cup, it's odd that there are two different designs. Perhaps E93 got iDrive shaped cup and E92 got the rectangular cup?

The console was made for a car to have i drive but you can buy a coin cup from the main dealers.

I think they changed it from LCI so all trims are the same whether idrive or not.
Just tooling economics, nothing more.
