Unless you put your mod chip in PRIOR to the DCMA, it is illegal (and even if you installed it before then it still might be), because the MOD chip circumvents the copy protection scheme. Also, technically, copying movies off of DVD's (if that is where they came from and they have CSS) also violates the DCMA because they are encrypted and you are therefor breaking the encryption to remove them from the disk.

All that said, the DCMA is WAY over the top, because I should be allowed to make copies of the DVD I own to another format for easier portability.

You are projecting your feelings of yourself onto the other person, now out of guilt that you are realizing what you have done is wrong.


Putting games on a system, selling the system, and retaining the games... anyway you cut that it is stealing the games.

That's cause you are selling the system with games that you do not own the rights to distribute as pre-loaded software. If you had those rights, you'd be ok. You have the right to use the game in any which way you want, but cannot distribute it without distributing the original copy.

My first post was me saying it in a joking matter, people would have taken it with a grain of salt. I only made a second post because you made a factually incorrect post stating that it wasn't illegal. The likely hood of someone being tracked down for owning that x-box are very slim, but people need to be aware of the potential pitfalls. People get up in arms about false advertising when a company does it, but when they get busted selling stuff on line, they lash out at the person who poked the hole in their false/incorrect ad.
