Is it really true that I can't get staggered PS/2s in Toronto?

Long story short -- had my summers put on this week and BMW Toronto informed me that some tire damage had mysteriously appeared on one of the sidewalls of my OEM Bridgestone summers. Of course it was nothing to do with them... Rather than pay them $500 (their "discounted" price for one 17" tire...) I decided to use this opportunity to get rid of the terrible run-flats.

However, my tire place tells me that they can't get me PS/2s with the 225/45/R17 255/40/R17 setup.

Is this accurate? Any good recommendations for other tire choices?

This is a tough one in 17" as the only E9x approved fitment (to my knowledge) for PS2s was in 18" not 17". The staggered PS2 "star" fitment was in 18" and the 17" sport package fitment was usually Bridgestone in North America.

I am currently running PS2 RFT (ZP in Michelin speak) for summer in 17" but in a square setup (225/45 R17 all around). I finally tracked these down on tirerack.com as no tire shop in TO could get them in. FWIW the Michelin ZP are head and shoulders above the old generation Bridgestone RFT in terms of ride quality so you may want to give them a chance unless you are 100% against RFT.

The tirerack PS2s I found were (luckily) USA country of origin so you can have them shipped to your door duty free under NAFTA without any dreaded UPS brokerage fees (you will pay shipping, HST and tire disposal fee to Tire Rack though). Just looking now and they are still available for about $1080 + taxes and shipping for the set.

I see you can actually find the 17" non-RFT staggered PS2 you are looking for right now for just under $1000 for the set, plus shipping and taxes. It's a Porsche fitment if you care about that though.

In terms of other choices my second option if I couldn't find the PS2 was going to be the ContiSportContact 3 SSR which is a little cheaper at $896 for the set. (also a next gen RFT with great reviews)

If you want to stick with non-RFT staggered 17" maybe take a look at the ContiSportContact 3 non-SSR or the ExtremeContact DW. Or if budget is your big concern maybe some of the Koreans which have tested pretty well against the PS2 or the Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec. Read this if you are looking for PS2 alternatives in your size:

I don't think you can yet find the Pilot Super Sport in that staggered 17" size combo or that would be up there on my list also.

Awesome reply. Thanks for the info.

I did check tire rack for the PS2s, but the weird thing is it shows that they aren't in stock and the estimated availability is May 31. I will definitely consider the Continentals.

No prob - you may also want to post in the Wheel and Tire forum here as I know it's monitored by some Tire Rack staff. They should be able to tell you more about their inventory and how badly the PS2 is back ordered, as well as advice on alternatives. (they do their own instrumented testing on a lot of the tires they sell)
