DD is a 2002 Lexus LS430 150K miles, never any problems except it burns a lot of gas.

I am also looking for an econo car. So far I like the Ford Fiesta and the Honda Fit. The Scion IQ has potential but I want something that I absolutely won't mod.

Like has been said before, go with a Civic MT you can get for dirt cheap. It'll last, get great mileage, and it's a car you can give zero fucks about. That's what I would do for sure.

Mazda3 or Civic w/manual trans.

I'm looking for a more fuel efficient beater, but keep coming up empty. 99% of the cars out there are overpriced and/or high miles. I'd rather stick w/the current beater. At least I know its history.

Fiesta is a great car. Got one for the other half to daily drive & we take it when we go out 99% of the time so I drive it quite a bit. No problems w/it so far. Bought new in November & now has over 12k miles on it. I just wish it had a manual trans. Have not gotten less than 35 MPG so far.

I have a 2000 VW Golf with 208K and still going.
I've owned it since new and am still on the original clutch, put two sets of brake pads on it (original set lasted me 99K).
Original exhaust lasted 10+ years and 180K miles.
Original radiator lasted 11 years and 190K miles.

All in all, I have had to do VERY little to this car other than routine maintenance. Oil change with synthetic ever 7500 or so. Brake fluid flush and radiator flush every two years and that's about it.

I changed the origianl timing belt at 160K Went well beyond anything else I've ever owned. VW has a "check and see" every 60K for the timing belt. Not a change it now at that mileage.

My wife and I love this little car to run around the city and local trips. Helps keep the mileage off our BMWs too.

Pic is of the Golf right before it turned 200K. Sorry for the crappy iPhone pic.

BTW: A buddy of mine has a 2002 Honda Civic automatic. I would shoot my brains out if I had to drive that BORING POS! It just plain sucks! It is the epitome of I don't care at all about cars or driving pleasure, I HAVE to own a car to get from point A to point B so this is what I'm stuck with.

I had a Mazda2 as a rental today, and I swear to god as street car it is WAY more fun to drive than my 135. I drove that car to an inch of it's life today and no one noticed. I expected it to plow through corners at the limit, but it understeers less than my 135 and a tiny bit of brakes gets the freaking thing sideways at the limit. I had an "oh shit" moment not expecting it, i almost spun the damn thing. I really got to work on what affects the car and how. It is extremely slow though, but it's well built, cheap, great on gas and REALLY fun to drive. I LOVED it.
