Tuxedo/Suit advice, going to Prom and Wedding in same month!
I know a lot you e90post guys are into nice things and have good taste so obviously I have to ask for advice from the board!
My brother is having his wedding this May and I will be his best man. We're supposed to be matching to some degree so I'd like something nice. Shortly afterwards, the next week, I have my prom that my GF is really looking forward to. My question to you guys is, should I go buy a tux or rent? I know rentals will cost me around $200 each time so I'll be out 400+ by the time I'm done. Is it worth it? How much would it cost to buy a tux? That way I could get it tailored to fit me right. Or should I just go with a suit? I don't know the difference to be honest. Any good brands you guys can recommend would be great. It can be hard to find a good fit off the shelves.. I'm 5 10 and about 160lbs athletic build, not bulky but more of a lean. Thanks

I bought a Calvin Klein Tux my junior year and got it tailored. I think I paid $800 for it (It's been so long). I used it junior year, senior year and 2 weddings. I got my money's worth out of it and my little bro can use it now for his prom(s). It will be worth buying it if you know you are going to use it more than 3 times. Other than that just rent.
Oh, I forgot to add I bought a new tie and vest every year so that adds to the cost as well. You can just rent the vest and tie though. Goodluck |

Since I stopped growing by senior year, I bought (well, my parents did...). Joseph Abboud tuxedo if I'm not mistaken, tailored. Went pretty classic. Black tuxedo, black shirt, white vest, white tie, cufflinks, and black patent leather shoes with white accents. White handkerchief with black trim and a white scarf.
So, it ultimately depends. Do you have the money to purchase a nice tuxedo to keep? Or, since you in high school, are your parents willing/able to help out? If not, renting might be better. Since you're young, tuxedos are things that I personally don't think should be purchased unless you are really getting something top quality. Also, if you are still growing, purchasing probably isn't the best idea.

About 3 years ago I was going to need a tux 3 times in a month so I bit the bullet and bought one. After all the tailoring and stuff it was around $600 but I still use it to this day (worn it an easy 8 times). If you don't think you are getting much larger, I would say just buy one you will get your moneys worth. Also, like others said if you grow out of it or you don't need it little brother/friends can get uses out of it.

My thinking is this: if you're going to be using it at least 3-4 times in the next few years it's better to buy a tux. You don't have to go and spend thousands of dollars for one. There are good/nice tuxedos that run around $600-800. I don't like the idea of renting especially if it's going to cost you $400 already.
It's like snowboarding gear with me. Every time you rent it's gonna run about $35-40. If you go a few times a year it might be a lot better to just buy the damn thing. |

im assuming ur around 17 or 18? and ur the not skinny but slimmer type with a bit of meat on u
You should def buy a SUIT, not tux (just a simple plain black one) it is possible to find a quality suit for under $300. I actually bought my first suit from kenneth cole when i was 17 and got it tailored. (their cuts are slimmer) you can def hit up like marshalls, or calvin kelin outlet, Kenneth cole outliet or like saks outlet those type of store and find a quality suit for cheap (but it takes some luck) no matter where u end up getting ur suit, always bring it to a tailor and have them adjust it for u, sleeves, shoulders, ur pants; nothing look worse than a misfitted suit. Good luck... ur first suit usually stick with u for awhile and u will def get a change to wear it in college and what not. I am 24 now and I still use the suit as part of my wardrobe. Just take care of the suit after u use it.

Don't rent, they'll fit horribly. Definitely buy a black suit at H&M or Zara. If you're going to prom, I'd assume you're around 18 yrs old so your body will still change and chances are the suit will not fit you in a few years so I would not suggest buying something very expensive. Plus with a black suit, you can separate the pants and jacket and use it on different occasion. The jacket with dark jeans and you got a good date night fit. You can wear the trousers with a white shirt and tie if you work at a office or something.
