Good story with a tire question

I have a 2009 328xi with dedicated summer and winter wheel/tire setups. For space reasons, I let my dealer store the off-season tires. So, last fall, I let them take my 17" sport package rims with Pirelli PZero RFTs and store them like they were storing my winter tires (which obviously went back on the car).

To make a long story short, they've lost my summer wheels and tires. The dealership's being very stand-up and dealing with this in absolutely the right way. They are ordering 18" Style 193 wheels for me in Ferric Grey and giving me a choice between the PZero RFTs I had and Michelin Pilot Sport 2 RFTs. No charge to me.

So, I get to go with 1" larger diameter wheels, which will fill the space a little nicer than the 17", and the Ferric Grey which will show a little less brake dust and look nicer anyway. The question is ... which tire? Pretty happy with the Pzeros, but what's the consensus on which tire is better?

Partly a bump, but I am leaning towards the PS2s.

Anyone think the Pzero would be a better choice? Wet weather handling matters as I live in the Pacific Northwest.

Garage List
2013 BMW M3  [10.00]
2015 BMW M4  [0.00]
2013 BMW F30  [0.00]
2014 BMW F22  [0.00]
2013 BMW F06  [0.00]
I'd go with the PS2's since I've personally ran them and they're awesome. (Non-RFT's) That's awesome that the dealer is giving you a set of 18's instead of 17's!

Yeah, I really can't complain. Had some issues with them in the past regarding misleading information when I bought the vehicle and wasn't sure that I would deal with them again if my next car is a BMW. This experience changes that. They are definitely going above the minimum that they would have to do and simply doing what's right. I am impressed.

So ... finally got the rims and tires on ... and the dealership seems to have messed up again. They put Pilot Sports on the car, not PS2s. I can't find a lot of current information on the Pilot Sports (they are on Michelin's site as an UHP tire). They aren't labelled ZP so they aren't run-flats.

Are they better than the PS2s? Current generation tire?

The dealer's going to have to fix this one way or the other (either by doing something to give me a solution for no spare or by replacing the tires with the PS2s). Any suggestions on what the best route is?

General concensus around here is the PSS is superior to the PS2. PSS is newer Gen than PS2, but not available in RFT, and run about $500 cheaper. If you like the ride, maybe ask them to throw in a spare tire kit and call it even.

I can't wait for my Bridgestones to wear out so I can replace them with either the PS2's or PSS's. Haven't decided which yet.

I don't think they're the PSS. Sidewalls only say Pilot Sport. How do I tell?

Looking at Tirerack site, the PS2's say Pilot Sport on the sidewall. Are you sure they aren't RFT's?

The PS2 has a small PS2 printed underneath the "t" at the end of "Sport" and have ZP marked on the tire. These just say "Pilot Sport"

I would ask them to replace the tires with what they originally agreed to...the PS2's.

Thanks ... I think that's probably what I'll do ... but the ride is nice without RFT's but unless they're willing to pop for a spare and maybe extend my tire warranty ... it's probably my best bet.

Well, that's the thing. You could ask them to replace with non-RFT PSS and throw in the spare kit...about the same price as PS2 RFT. They may balk at replacing RFT with RFT, but PSS is superior to PS. Good luck.
