Ticking noise
So, as many of you i have decided to change the spark plugs.
Thought i had the right tool but i didn't and only realized after i got everything from the top of the engine. so i decided to drive without anything on top until i get the socket. HOLLY ticking. First i thought i messed up the connections or something like that. What is that ticking coming from the engine? Sounds like diesel and only when i accelerate not on downshifts. Was the ticking always there and i couldn't hear just because of the cover or it just started now? i also cleaned the MAF sensor, would that have to do with the ticking? |

ticking? unless its super loud i dont think you have a problem. thats the most common sound on literally every 335i there is next to a wastegate rattle, which IS a problem. turn your car on, no ticking right? let it idle for a couple minutes, hello ticking again right? its normal for a direct injected engine. Direct Injection uses high pressure fuel utilizing piezo injectors. the ticking is the sound of the injectors firing the fuel into each of the cylinders. welcome to e90post.

Ticking
There was another post about this recently where a guy had the same ticking noise and posted a video where you could hear what he was talking about and I'm pretty sure it went away after he got his valves cleaned.

i bought the car recently and there were no ticking noises.
Things i've done: cleaned MAF sensor and put fuel injector cleaner in the car. that's it. when i drove it without the cover the sound was always there, specially on acceleration but if i don't shift i don't hear it. |

Thats why the engine cover is there. Its insulated thats why you couldnt hear it as much with the cover on. Leaving the cover off makes a HUGE difference in engine noise. Put it back on and dont worry. The DI injectors are very noisy, its normal

Wow, it really surprised me, I thought the engine is busted.
I've had other fuel injected cars but not turbo and never this much noise. I guess I have to get used to it. Thank you very much. |
