Question Snap-In Adapter Removal?

Guys, how the hell do you remove the snap-in-adapter assembly? I've bought the tray with the intention of converting back to this:

(Not my picture, just googled it).

I'll never use the snap in adapter as I want audio out so might as well turn it into a useful tray so... how the hell do I get it out? I've removed the handbrake gaiter but that doesn't seem much help...

Would it be easier when I take the centre console apart to install my sunglasses tray?

EDIT: here's the item I bought to replace it: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/170797575140

X2... I've searched for guides and think it involves a shit load of dismantling. I tried the crude method of levering it with a screw driver and stopped before I totally f##ked it up.

Incidentally, I have this plastic tray that I'm willing to sell on!

I left mine.
And cut a piece of rubber non slip chequer mat and glued it on with bostick.
Works well and looks tidy.

I've just done this - not as bad as I thought (having read this post first...)

If you have pulled off the handbrake gaiter, you should be able to see a tab in the void sticking down. Push this over and press up hard at the same time. The snap in is in two pieces, you should be trying to lift the two together. Not the inner piece first. Once it's out, pull the white connector block near the h/brake towards you to disconnect from the loom. The larger plug has a fold over clasp securing it. Once it's all out it does create more space in an otherwise smaller space. Good luck!
