Post Why Canadians pay more for everything ?

Interesting article: http://www.thestar.com/business/arti...for-everything

"Canadian retailers say their suppliers tell them they charge more because Canadians are used to paying more for products in Canada; that the higher prices subsidize the costs of maintaining offices and operations in Canada, and that the higher prices are necessary to compensate their Canadian distributors and wholesalers."

Sad, but true.

The pricing difference is ridiculous. Im just glad I live 15 minutes from the border. I go to Washington once a week to get gas and groceries, saves an easy 40-50% over shopping locally.

gas - no duties
groceries - generally no duties under normal limits - not if you bring like a truck packed full of groceries

Yes, we are getting ripped off in canada for almost everything we buy! The more expensive (luxury), the more mark up. With the exception of LV products - the pricing here in Canada is actually competitive with the US.

Sad but true indeed, but also in the US the population is also 10x more = more people buying.

But thats the thing though, our $ has been strong for sometime and prices should drop, however they are dropping the prices quickly as it goes up. Thats why more people buy stuff outside and the Canadian stores are loosing some business, too bad for them and sadly not good for the economy.

I believe last year Canada lost tons for $$$$$ due to people shopping south.

Yea like Turkish said, I pay no duty. The only time you'll pay duty on gas is if you bring it across in jerry cans. I think one of the best examples of cheaper groceries in the states is vitamin water. One of the brands is $1.00 a bottle at Target in Washington, its something like $2.75/bottle at Safeway in Canada. If you buy a bunch it adds up quick...

Nice to know, next time I go to buffalo I'm gonna stock up on this s#%, I love vitamin water.

When I saw this article first thing I thought was about the price of cars / parts / mods, but when I stop to think, almost all my clothes I bought in the south.

The worst part is like BRAISKI said, that is bad for our economy as well, but what can we do, some things are really double of the price here... even for us in Toronto, sometimes it worths the 2 hour trip + gas to buffalo to buy stuff.

BMW is notorious for this gouging also.

An E92 M3 in Canada starts at almost 72k and in the states it's about 60k. If you take euro delivery which is NOT available here they knock off another 5k. It's basically a free trip to Germany!!!

Pisses me off...

Porsche is well known to rape their customers too. I'm afraid the so-called luxury car market in Canada is artificially inflated.

Real story...
Niagara Falls casino. Game of Black Jack. 5 folks at the table.
Dealer was over the top, so every-one got paid. Cards were tossed of the table.
10 seconds later delaer remember she already had 18 when she drew the last card. As per casino rules, dealer should stop at 17 no matter what.
I won't go into further details, but they asked every-one to give their winnings back.
I was the only one who said a word and asked to speak with the floor manager. Every-one else just returned the tokens at first request.

Sorry to say that, but Canadians seem to be suckers when it comes to spending hard earned cash. Just different mentality from people in US.

+1 on shopping in the US. I live in Windsor and we pretty much don't buy anything in Canada. Once you have the nexus pass, the border is a breeze. It's unfortunate, but I have to protect my earnings, just like the companies in Canada protect theirs, with higher prices.

well, us folks in Ontario just got r*ped again by the Liberals/NDP with the new surtax. Just take all money while you're at it. What the hell.

I'm basically buying all my clothes in Buffalo and online now because of the price difference. Pretty much the only things I buy locally are groceries and gas but even after shipping, it's still cheaper.

Even on the tags of the clothes, a $30 USD item will be marked as $40 CAD. Even after taxes, it doesn't add up to that much more.

For BMW parts, I'm buying it mostly from the States now and just driving over the border to pick it up. Even after declaring it, it's still almost 50% cheaper (like my M-Tech bumper - cost of freight to Canada just costs way more than if it were to stay on the US side of Niagara).
