You are fine. It will come right off. Use enough coats

I have done this lots of times. In fact, I pulled plasti dip off parts of my car today while detailing it. It will never damagae anything, no matter what. It comes off clean with no residue no matter how long you leave it on.
From personal experience, I will also say that it's a million times easier to remove it later if you put on enough coats in the first place... like 5 or so. Any less and it's a bit more of a pain to remove in big pieces (though it still poses no risk to your paint.) I also made this DIY that you may like to read: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=671155 |

Worst case you screw it up and have to redo it. You'd be out 6 bucks and a couple of hours. And I guess some newspapers. You can do it over and over till you get it right, with no risk of harm. My lower grills in my signature pic are plastidip. That was my first time using the stuff, and I managed to get it on the first try.

+1 Even coverage is key, it will make large areas such as the roof look less blotchy and ease with removal.

Are there long term studies done and is there enough evidence to back up this seemingly conclusive statement?

I've never seen this stuff but thinking I should buy stock in whatever company makes it.
