Grrrrr.. soooo annoying.. what would you do?
Well last night I left work, walked up to my car and found this:
The top part of my wing is cracked measuring around 40cms and I have a small dent on my drivers door. There was no details left on my car and I'm slowly losing hope that there will be anything on any CCTV. What would you suggest, new wing, smart repair (with plastic weld), second hand wing from the breakers? I received a quote from BMW for nearing £900!! I don't really want to claim on my insurance as it will be classed as a fault against me as there is no third party. Any thoughts, guidance appreciated. It's the annoying thing, that's what insurance is there for but people are scared to use it in case they get further bent over the following year. It's pretty much a tax.
I can't see the pics but have read the damage. I guess it depends on how much spare cash you have vs what the extra will be in insurance premiums over the next few years. |

Hi,
I have no spare cash at the moment (got married a month ago so that has used up what I had). Insurance will be £250 excess, plus the potential increase next year and every year after that. Would you think a smart repair was even possible, if not I'm barking up the wrong tree looking at smart repair companies? |

That's really crap mate. It's why I take a 360 degree video of all the cars around me in the work carpark before I head to the Office...
Looks like a 4x4 spare wheel has hit it. I really hate buggers that do this. Hope u get sorted out OK. |

Sorry to here that. I've had this happen to me on a previous car when I was working at the weekend, talk about ruining the weekend.
The wing doesn't look too bad from what I can see of the pics to be honest, most of it will probably polish out and the crack should be repairable by a good smart repairer. The dent might be more of a concern. Where is it on the door? If it's too close to the edges, most smart repairers won't be able to fix it without a respray. Even with a smart repair you are probably looking at £200-300 to get it all sorted. Where abouts are you based? If you are anywhere near London, I have a brilliant smart repair recommendation. |

God, there's some wankers around! I reversed in to a parked car a few months ago, the only damage done was a scuffed number plate, I still waited for the owner to come back to get details and ordered front AND rear plates up for her!
If it was mine I'd be on the look out for a wing from a breaker in the same colour - I know silver is notoriously difficult to match, but it's better than claiming imo. |

If you wanted to replace the wing I'd say a bodyshop could replace with a used wing and paint for about £500
Worth popping the bonnet and seeing how made the damage is inside. |

A Smart repair really ain't going to sort that, the paint is cracked a long way along the top lip of the wing, that can only be sorted with a respray and the costs will be pretty high. Take a good look round the car park, a 4x4 with a bit of your silver paint on their spare wheel cover would need to be talked to.

Are the front wings plastic? Mine is metal, was there a changeover?
Either way I would start calling the breakers and source a wing, its a common colour and its a simple bolt on job. Last edited by Giff; 05-17-2012 at 12:59 PM.. |

Thanks for you comments guys, I've registered on 247 spares for a new wing, so fingers crossed. A smart repair guy I used before on my rear bumper said it's a body shop job... But I think that's my last option.
First thing I did today was look at the 4x4s in the car park, but none had spares on the back plus the tyre tread mark is the wrong way (is is rolling over the top of the wing.. Like a rainbow ) so the top half of a wheel. People at work think it's the business park gardeners/maintenance which is likely as they use tractors and sit on mowers etc.... Fingers crossed our office manager finds something tomorrow. |

The cracked paint cannot be fixed afaik.
However the 180 degree mark looks as though it could potentially just be polished out? Can't see any white from the primer so has it even penetrated through the paint? If the entire thing does need respraying, a wing is not going to be that expensive. £200 from a decent bodyshop? |

Only just seen this, I'm assuming you didn't call and tell the insurance at all?
Happened to me when I was younger and called them before deciding what to do as I thought that's what you're supposed to do but then told them I would get sorted without insurance and they told me that it was no on record and I had to declare as a 'no claim' - I was livid and obviously you have that for 5 years sometimes more |

Well its still not looking promising for any CCTV/Witnesses....
I called my insurance company on Wednesday when I noticed it and explained what happened etc. They advised that I first see if I can find a third party before officially claiming, look at my options and when I find out/decide, call them back. I have the guys name that I spoke to and the time (plus my call logs), but he didn't take any of my insurance details so they never logged any thing on their system. I think either way, I need a new wing, so I will try and get one off ebay/internet in silver and either: 1)Hope the colour is OK and change it myself 2)If the colour doesn't match go down the body shop route. At least I wont get charged their price for a new wing. Last edited by djnas123; 05-18-2012 at 08:41 AM.. |
