So my car is making a very wierd buzzing/vibrating sound at idle. I thought at first maybe it was the exhaust hanger but it appears to be coming from the engine bay. Right around the intake manifold area. I looked around for something that might be loose but I didnt see anything.

No cels and the car runs fine. No mods either.

Any ideas??

I had a similar noise but mine was the A/C compressor going out (I know it's in a different spot). But yeah sorry to hear about this, my thoughts go out to you, hope everything works out, keep us posted!

Just a crazy idea but just for the hell of it go out and check your power steering fluid level, i remember on my excursion mine was almost dry and it made a similar noise, obviously a 7.3D and a 3.0 n/a are two different planets but its worth a look.

hard to tell from a video but i would also think about having a look at the timing chain, just because a failure could be catastrophic.

Ill double check the ps fluid. I was a little suspicious of the power steering pump though. I can hear it whine every so often. Ive never heard one make the noise mine does though. First time for everything


My car has just over 80k miles. Whats the inspection interval for the timing chain?

no idea. havent heard of one going out either. timing belts get replaced, our cars have chains which last awhile. its very very remote it could be this but thought i would mention it.

I have the EXACT same sounds. I can also hear it from the inside also.
From what I have been reading and researching it seems to be the power steering pump.
Did you end up finding out what it was? Would to know as it sounds like the issue I am having.
Please let me know.

To me, it sounds like a loose drive belt. Let us know what you find it to be.

Hi, i am new to this forum and hoping to find the solution to this problem. I have the exact same sound, not similar but exactly the same. Did any one figure out what it was? I have also been suspecious of the ps pump but i had a ps failure on my old e46 330 and it never made this noise. Also when i turn the steering wheel it doesnt seem to affect the sound. Any help or guidance would be very much appriciated. I am going to take it to a mechanic as soon as possible but alot of the times they dont know what the hell is wrong snd just start replacing parts till they find the real cause of the problem and that would be costly for me as the car is out of warranty. Thanks im advance

I got a similar symptoms and BMW did changed these parts:

Part 11287530314 (MECHANICAL BELT TENSIONER)
Part 11287535860 (Deflection pulley)

The engine now run like new!

engine cover? seems to get pretty loud when you're near it and it's not secured as well in the N52 vs latter revisions
