Water pump failure
My water pump failed today, and it was at 66K miles. V.S. Motorsport quoted me $1250 to replace the water pump and thermostat, and also flush the coolant. The price includes the part. Is this a fair price? There was another shop named VFC Engineering in Chicago quoting me $1650 including the parts, and the shop was insane. Their price is even more expensive than BMW dealership. (I checked) First, they were dishonest when they gave out estimate about the cost of the parts, and they also over-charge customer with their labor fees. Moreover, their attitudes were really bad and didn't seem to value their customers. I paid $107 for diagnostic fee after I brought my car to this nearby european auto repair shop (VFC). I was very regretted of my decision and I was not even bothered to talk to the staffs at VFC after they try to overcharge me in every way they could. Then I just had my car towed to V.S. Motorsports. Bad Day!!

You could always do the repair yourself. The parts should be around $600 total.

i'm not a pro of installing engine parts on cars. I'm just so worried to fuck things up, so I prefer to have a pro done it for me. |

Water pump - $614 Thermostat - $113 Hardware - $8.4 OEM BMW Coolant - $23.50 Labor 5 hours - $425 ($85 per hour) Tax 9.25% - $70 Is 5 hours labor reasonable? Brothers please tell me how many hours are fair to install the waterpump and thermostat. VFC Engineering over estimate the parts to almost $950. (that's why I meant they were dishoneset when they gave estimate about parts) Then their labor fee is also ridiculous, almost $610 for just labor fee. |

Ouch, sorry to hear this happen, I'm scared mine will go out within the next year or two. I'm currently at 40k and it has been problem free for me ever since 15k, not even a single fuel pump replacement *Knock on wood*. How did it happen to you though, did you just go into limp mode and then a hazard signal went on your screen? How did you determine it was the water pump?

Consider yourself lucky. Mine failed with only 32K miles on the car. And it was the most freaking inconvenient place where I was. No choice but get towed to BMW pay the $1650 parts and labor curse like a drunken sailor and hope nothing else happened. I was busy as hell with work and school and all I needed was yet another distraction. Anyway its common issue with these cars and the pumps are crap at best. If it has the word pump in its name and its a BMW part, you are guaranteed it will fail it seems. Doesn't matter if its fuel water or oil, they are all crap parts. BMW can't seem to make any reliable pumps.

I got my water pump done for much cheaper than that. ~$600. 2 hours labor.

My girl friend has a vehicle, but she needs to drive it to school, so I couldn't really use her car for most of the time. And I couldn't wait for the time to have Tischer delivered the parts. It will take almost a week for shipping. So I chose to ask VS. Motorsports to get the parts for me from bmw dealer. So it takes only 4 hours? Maybe I would try to talk to the staffs at VS Motorsports and see if they will kindly give me a discount for labor fee.
