One thing to keep in mind:

In the US, the "BMW Performance Synthetic" is still just a "Group III" traditional oil. In Europe, you would not be allowed to call it a synthetic. Outside of the US, the BMW Performance Sythnetic is called "Castrol Softec". It is available at my local dealer; however, it is only used in the older cars (pre 1999).

For newer cars, the dealer is using a "real" synthetic (Group IV), Castrol SLX 0W30.

Yet another thing to keep in mind is that in 2012 (and for a few years now) GIII and GIII+ oils are really, really good. The API SM rating (now obsoleted by SN) drove huge advances in non-synthetic oil technology.

The performance of the final package and having the characteristics (like visc and HTHS) the engine expects are more important than obsessing about what "group" an oil may or may not be.

Do I care whether my sandwich tastes good, is fresh, healthy, toxin free or do I obsess about what brand of mustard they used to make it, even if it tastes worse when using something more expensive?

If your engine is clean, well lubricated, the seals are kept in good shape, it's free from deposits and has low wear then you're in good shape regardless of what "group" you poured in the crankcase.

Don’t get me wrong, the TXT Softec is a good oil. In the late 1990’s, it was Porsche’s factory fill

By the way, your sandwich analogy’s pretty cool, Bro. Having said that, in my opinion, labeling a Group III “full synthetic” is like calling SPAM “Jamón Ibérico”

That SLX is the only LL04 oil which is PAO only. The LL01 version is sold in the US (0w30).

The LL01 0W30 is the "German Castrol" that we hear a lot about, right? If I were in the US, that's what I'd be using...
