put ur filter in close the cap and call it a day, i have never let the oil go that low to even know if its normal or not but I'm pretty sure it is, my oil changes take about 15 mins tops.

Yes, you must have used something to soak up or suck up the oil on the bottom of the housing. Mine has never drained by itself to reveal the oval shape hole.

I think he's talking about how that oval opening looks cracked and ragged, like something broke. I believe it's been posted before and it was determined normal.

The housing should begin draining as soon as you break the seal on the filter housing. By this I mean that the O-ring must leave the barrel of the housing so air can get in past the threads, not just when it starts turning.

My normal procedure on BMW cartridge filter cars so I don't get oil all over the place is to loosen the housing a couple of turns and wait for it to drain before pulling the filter.

I don't see anything in the picture that's a problem, as others have said here.

My car is just about to go out of motorplan (service plan) and since I don't do tremendous mileage per year I want to change the oil at least once a year which would then be approximately every 12k km compared to the normal 25k km interval. But now, what do you guys use to remove the oil filter cap? Some sort of strap grip or what?

The first time i did it, it was stuck, SO I used a big ass plumbers wrench, then I ordered the oil cap online that fits great, I use that every time now.

Do you mean an oil cap like what the E46 has - 36mm socket fit?

I just used the kung fu grip to take it off. You can buy a tool for it though.
this uses a 26mm socket:
