yes, it's a bracket that holds the two mid pipes in place, while it doesn't do too much help, i left it there just in case and good luck on your car, if you need anymore help i'll try my best to assist you

Reviving an old thread. Well this noise is still there and I still can't figure it out. Any BMW techs here. To clarify more this happens when car is fully hot. If I beat on it for a little and come to a stop and idling this noise happens. If I gently tap the gas and let it go the noise happens right before the idle settles down. I want to love my car but I'm starting to hate it everyday. Thank if anyone answers.

Did'u try unbolting everything from midpipes to exhaust and rev? That would solve your worry if it's the engine. If it's the midpipes, you can buy my Eisenmann SR pipes and it'll sound better than muffler delete, GL.

Do you race a lot off the line? Aggressive launch at stop lights (alone/other cars)? If yes, how are you doing it?
Maybe something wrong with your torque converter. Quote:

I rev the car high but I don't think a torque converter will make a noise like that.

Well I got access to a lift yesterday and unbolted the exhaust and tightened everything possible under the car. Heat shields and all. Still no avail to this noise. It's driving me into the ground. Everything under the car is normal. Shook the the exhaust and nothing is hitting or rattling in there. Would a vacuum leak cause this type of noise I do hear a slight hiss when tr idle drops before the noise starts.

Warmed up the car pretty good today to replicate the noise. Put a stethoscope to the tranny while the noise was accruing and it is not from the tranny but somewhere around that area. Will do some more testing.
