Is it harmful to add a little oil before the computer tells you to add a quart?

Wish there was a physical dipstick retrofit!! Have wondered the same thing, can you assume that when it shows for example 50% that it is actually half of a litre down?

There could be. For the MY2010 3 series manual, check page 137. There is an actual procedure for checking the oil by using the disptick and its location.

The owner's manuals are on BMWUSA.com. I looked at the 2010 manual and there's certainly nothing on page 137. Page 219 mentions checking the oil level with a dipstick then 220 there's info on the electronic check. But, the owner's manual is a combined manual which includes the 335d which does have a dipstick. I'm sure this reference in the owner's manual applies to the 335d only (in the US market). |

let it go down to 1QT low then add a QT. The BMW carries way more oil then most cars even 1 QT down.

Best way to handle this is to simply add a half quart when you get 1 bar before low. That way you will never see the disturbing low oil level warning message and you will also never overfill.
By the way, these engines generally never need more than a quart to top off between changes, and that quart can be most any cheap ass oil because it only has to last the few thousand miles before it's drained anyway. Wasteful to add a $7 quart of synthetic oil a couple of thousand miles before it's changed! |
