Been reading about walnut blasting and seems like the way to go for N54 carbon cleaning

I've been researching equipment and there's a place in Melbourne that sells the blaster and the walnut shell media

It's pretty cheap for the equipment - less than $200 - can anyone in the know have a look and see if this would work? I dont know what the official BMW tool looks like or does but if the above is effective I propose whoever wants to do this gets involved and we buy the tool as a group, get together on a sat/sun arvo, crack open the spanners and get to work removing our intakes and giving the a clean. From what I've been reading the tool is only used for a few seconds on each intake so should take no more than 5 mins per engine. We should be able to get through everyone's car in a couple of hours.

All we need is someone with expertise on the procedure and for them to help with getting intake off / on etc.

Im sure we can work something out.

I hear dealers charge $1-$1.5k to do this so thought its worth a crack for the price....

Any interest in this?

I just had mine done yesterday. As my workshop didn't have the correct head for it, they just cleaned by hand (the old school way of doing it anyway).

Takes approx 1 hour each way to get the cover off/on I believe. Cleaning is up to 3 minutes per cylinder.

I have photos etc of the official tool if you want it.

My car runs alot better now after getting it done.

50k on the clock.

Thanks Luster. When you say by hand do you mean they scrubbed the valves clean or used blasting tool?

Also, what was the charge please? I have 88k's so think its time I do it too

I wouldn't take too much notice of lusty. His proceed car ran like a three legged dog today, in fact at one point I am sure I saw him on the track and it smelled like a Diesel (musta filled up at the wrong pump) :

I wouldn't take too much notice of pavo, when he wasn't tearing up the grass off the track, he was battling with misfires on every cylinder.

Mine was consistent and only had misfires on 1 cylinder

Yep read that post bornadog but don't want to tackle a job like this DIY without some supervision.

Also - this is not a BMW tool so some guidance and improvisation may be needed - both of which require some level of experience that I don't have.

Oh well.... Sure this thread will be resurrected when more idles get lumpy...

Dude dont do it as a DIY you are risking your engine if you get it wrong
