Which ipod to buy for 6FL option?
My e92 335i will be delivered next month. It will have the 6FL option. I have never owned an ipod but ordered the 6FL option based on the glowing reviews and obvious convenience.
Which ipod should I buy, the 8gb nano or the 30gb ipod + video? Will the 30gb model with the hard drive skip in the car? Is it therefore necessary to get the nano, which I understand is better suited to jogging (due to its flash memory) and therefore not as prone to skipping? The two ipods are the same price and I expect whichever one I buy will be almost 100% dedicated to car use. Please share your experiences and suggestions. |

I have the 30gb video iPod in my car (although I've only had the car a few weeks), and it works great. I've never heard it skip once. I would get the video one, more storage and you at least have the option to take it out and view pictures and/or watch videos. It also fits nicely in the leather case so the bigger footprint is not an issue at all.

Which iPod to get total depends on how much music you need to store. I have an 80Gig iPod which I used yesterday on a highway trip in my E93. I did not have any skipping problems.
Do you already have a whole bunch of MP3s? If so, you have another option. The USB port will accept generic USB mass storage devices like those little USB flash drives. I have a 4 Gig flash drive I keep in the car. It doesn't hold all my music, but it holds a good bunch. You can organize the MP3s in folders all you like on the flash drive. The iPod, however only stores things by Playlist, Album, Artist, Genre. At least on my iPod, scrolling through a flat list of all the albums takes a long time. But it could be faster if you organize the albums in folders and just store it on the flash drive. |

Thanks to you both. It sounds like the regular ipod works fine in the car and has lots more storage for the same price so that is what I will do. I appreciate the thought on the flash drive but I'm such a newbie at this it seems that the ipod is the simple solution.

I had a video 30gb in my Z and it was a fairly bumpy ride when I had my suspension done and I never had a skipping problem.

During the 2.5 yrs that I had my 20gb ipod, I never once experienced a skip. I ran with it, took it on road trips, biked, dropped it, etc. I just recently died on my last roadtrip though, I think the hard drive is done. I love the storage capacity of the larger ipods but moving parts in the hard disk really can't take the beating that flash memory can. Not to mention the 24hr battery life of the new nanos. Just cut out the crap you never listen to and 8gb should hold a decent amount of songs.
