While I had my 2005 E90 330i in for service my independent repairer ran a computer check for faults and it brought up one for the CAS (car access system). He tells me it means that the steering lock could malfunction, so that it cannot be unlocked. He tells me also they have had a few of the same fault in 3 Series'. There is no guarantee it will happen but if it did, it would be a flatbed truck recovery job, which you could bet would be at the worst possible time.

The fix is a new steering column at around $1000. I'm thinking I will probably get the replacement job done and try to recover cost through my non-factory warranty.

I was wondering if any of you fine people has heard of this fault or knows anything about it.

Yes. This is a comment fault on early E90s.
But i would just leave it and wait for the fault to come up. Half the time you can still drive the car.
