I took the 6AT 58mm out to stretch its legs. Its frightenly fast ...

When the car was "just FBO+meth", it had the mid-range punch, but you can feel it taper as the turbo ran out of breath - so I could adjust my expectations knowing that there was a tapering of power.

With the single turbo, there is no taper, it pulls all the way up to the top and then you shift into the next gear and do it again and again (i didn't even try 5th gear, just 2-3-4). There is no "pause" between gear shifts to build more boost, it feels like its already there making full boost right after the shift completes.

When i saw the numbers, I was initially a little disappointed that it made only "573 WHP" when the 6MT has nearly 100 WHP more. It really has to do with the fact that the 6AT is out of revs - if the 6AT could rev to 7200 RPM, there would be a bit more to be had.

In all honesty, I realize I don't need any more power ... its is now making 200+ WHP more at redline than my FBO+meth setup (368 WHP).

Yeah, its fun ... its scary fun!

Does it drive more like a Mitsubishi Eclipse Turbo? Wallop of juice past a certain point but completely flat down low? It would be interesting to see an overlay of the FBO graph vs this so we can see what compromise really is and what we can expect to give up to get the what you are enjoying now.

I've had evos and subies in the past and this doesn't feel anything like that. We've got more cylinders and displacement - there are also different engine characteristics in play too.

I would also say its like the inverse feeling ... not the lag and vertical ramp, there is very little lag and then a flat (NA-like) rush for 1000s of RPM. I think that flat rush is due to the flat torque curve.

Not that my word means anything ... I don't feel like I'm giving up anything. I typically drive in DS or M mode and always had the revs at 3000-ish RPM.

made me happy to see read that sentence.. the 2jz will always be its own awesome beast but the n54 sure is becoming the modern day bmw version of it and thats what i want to see. big numbers may mean 750-800 whp for the n54 in the near future.

It doesn't feel ANYTHING like an Eclipse. Even off boost, a high compression 3.0 is never torque-less. So you never get the feeling of the engine just not responding as you would in a low compression 4 cylinder. With the single n54, the transition from vacuum to boost is seamless and linear. And once at full boost, the car pulls and doesn't let up. In a way, it's actually more predictable (and of course much more exciting) than an FBO car that pulls hard for a 1000rpm or so and then dies off as the revs climb.

I agree. With many of the Eclipses and Evos I've driven (from stock to over 640 WHP) power delivery is definitely there, but it's much more violent than in any of the single turbo N54 cars we've finished up. These cars just pull so effortlessly from any gear in any RPM it's scary. You can predict, or expect the 4 cylinder cars to build boost, accelerate, and go. As soon as the pedal touches the carpet, these n54 single turbo cars move. I find myself smiling thinking of how capable the 6AT cars are. It's definitely changed my perspective on how capable the BMW 6AT is.

Still waiting for pricing?

One of the common traits of highly successful people is the ability to get things done despite any obstacle, whether real or imaginary.

Who wants it?

Any plan on doing installs anywhere other than Cali? My car was on sale but all this is giving me second thoughts lol. I think I will hold on to this car for a bit longer. BTW I have Dinan CAI is that an obstacle to this conversion?

The intake is completely removed.

Shiv, I will gladly be your guinea pig for the small turbo and 6MT. Have a dyno dynamics and dynojet within 5 miles of the shop. I can fly you out once it is installed.
