This is on my 2008 535xi. The video shows with just a sight blip of the throttle I can make the rattle sound repeat - it doesn't take a 3000RPM rev of the engine to make the noise.
I took this video after the turbos were good and warm. The view is under tha car looking up from the front passenger tire. Seems more like a heat shield (or something similar) kind of rattle to me. http://s106.photobucket.com/albums/m...t=63a2efef.mp4 Last edited by NoQuarter; 06-16-2012 at 03:24 PM.. |

So I have convinced myself it is wastegate rattle. After I get the turbos good and hot I can park it in the garage, shut it off for a bit, then start it and produce it everytime.
With it up on jack stands, I placed my mechanics stethoscope on the exhaust side of the turbo and could here the rattle clearly as the RPMs came down from 3,000 all the way to 1,000. Interestingly it was only from one of the turbos. Next step is to see if my service center confirms it. |

original owner at 57k miles. so no. no warranty. but it is a known issue on my car, i have it documented for a while... seems to be getting worse, plus the whole lawsuit thing extending turbo warranty to 8 yrs/ 82k. I'm hoping to get them to do something

I demonstrated the rattle to my SA, mechanic and Service Manager. They took the car for the day and the next day told me BMW approved replacement of both turbos.
Waiting for parts and should get the car back early next week. Will have fresh radiator fill, power steering, front diff, oil lines, vacuum lines. I have 72,000+ miles on it. |

I believe I have the same issue with wastegate rattle. Now is this pretty much just an annoyance to people or does wastegate rattle end up ruining the turbos? The rattle on mine doesnt seem as noticable to me, but its still there. But overall it doesnt really bother me. But if its something that can ruin the turbos then I guess the car needs to get back to stock then to the dealer.
