Just got water pump replaced! car runs terrible
Hey guys, I just got my water pump and thermostat replaced at my local BMW dealer. I drove my car home and went away for the weekend.
Today I was driving it all day and the car is running terrible. No engine response, much less power and I cant seem to reach boost target. 2nd gear feels like 4th. Any thoughts on what could have went wrong? I already called BMW to notify them they said they would speak to the technician about it. My car is out of warranty and I am assuming they will deny all options of them being responsible. Is it possible that when the was overheating something else broke? gasket melted, etc? Does the thermostat or water pump install involve anything that might cause such symptoms such as disconnecting a boost line or something? If anyone has any suggestions plz chime in. Thanks, Dynomyte |

Probably co-incidence here. I have had all those things go bad and replaced in my car. But if you are early pre-2008 car might want to get fuel system checked. It might turn out to be failing low pressure fuel pump or pressure regulator. I know the HPFP is the famous one that fails, but I had your symptoms and turned out to be other two. I was already on my 4th HPFP so I thought it was it again, but was wrong. Is it suddenly and randomly running out of power??

Car was running fine right before I dropped it off. I will check all the codes in a few minutes. I doubt its the fuel pump im at my 3rd and had the 3rd one for over 2 years.
It feels like a boost leak. Gaz pedal is very unresponsive. Would they actually have to touch any boots related parts for the thermostat/water pump install? |

You would get codes for anything and limp mode.

My car does not go into limp mode. Just feels extreamly unresponsive.
Codes are the following: 2C9F 2F80 29F3 I searched all these codes and all members on the forums didnt notice a reduction in power. I will change the firmware and map on the procede maybe that will help. Anyone else has a clue? |

Does it feel like there's no boost? That's what it feels like when the coolant temp gets up around 240*, and I would bet that your coolant temp sensor is somehow involved. I just replaced my water pump and was driving a few days later, had no lights or indication of problem, but the car wouldn't hit boost. I looked at my BMW Perf steering wheel and it said my coolant temp was 425* (WTF???). I knew that was false because the car felt fine and obviously the head wasn't melting, but then I pulled over, power cycled the car, and when it started again my coolant temp was at 160* (because the fan/water pump were running full speed due to the sensor abnormality). Why it didn't show any warning (like it did when the water pump died), but had the ridiculous high water temp, is still a mystery. I would have had no idea had I not had the performance wheel that displays the coolant temp from the stock sensor. Thing is worth its weight in gold.

The coolant sensor might be the culprit. I will call the dealer. So from what I understand the Thermostat and coolant sensor are 2 different parts?

Yeah it feels like there is much less boost and it extremely unresponsive. Gaz pedal feels heavy. Basically feels the same as when the engine overheated. You pus the gaz in and the car is reluctant to move.

I am still trying to figure this out. Is the termostat and coolant temp sensor 2 different parts? I have done some searching and cannot find anything.

So I figured out the cause of this whole fiasco. After I picked the from the dealer I reloaded firmware and maps and WG was set to 90%.
After reading a few posts regarding similar symptoms I set the WG to 30% and all symptoms were gone. |
