DIY Wireless iPod control using Scosche IPNRFCS
I just purchased a 2009 328 xDrive and my car didn't come with the iPod control capability through the radio. I often listen to audio books and was looking for an inexpensive solution that would allow me to pause/stop what I was listening to and then easily resume upon returning to the car.
I keep my iPod touch in the armrest area. The 1/8" audio output (headphone) jack is connected using a short cable to the audio input jack in the armrest compartment. I also have a 30-pin iPod charging cable connected to the power jack in the armrest compartment. You listen to the iPod using the 'Aux' source option in the factory radio, and the radio and steering wheel volume control the volume. After reading through this site and several others, I found a small wireless RF remote by Scosche that works well. The transmitter connects to the steering wheel, or wherever you'd like to place it, and allows you to play/pause, skip forward or backward, change volume, shuffle, and change playlist. The receiver connects to the bottom of your iPod and has a passthrough that allows you to connect a 30-pin Apple charging cable. Using this device, I can pause upon arrival at my destination using the remote mounted on the steering wheel. The iPod goes into pause and after a few minutes switches off automatically. When I return to the car, power is resumed to the iPod when I start the car. When the remote is used to resume playing, the iPod picks up right where I left off. The charger continues to charge the iPod when you're driving around. Not quite as elegant as being able to control the iPod through the factory radio and steering wheel, but for $40 and 5 minutes of installation time, I think it was a good trade off. |

pretty good solution, but to be honest I'm not a fan of that additional remote on the wheel. what i did was purchase the TuneLink bluetooth receiver, it plugs into the 12V charger in the arm rest and has an aux out which you can use a short aux cable to connect to the aux-in in the arm rest as well. this way i can play music through my phone without any cables connected. the TuneLink app for the phone also sets it so that it stops music when the car is turned off and it loses connection to the device and resumes when the car is turned on.
