320d modifications possible ???
hi guys ive recently purchased a 2005 320d e90 auto for my longgggg drive to and from work in west london.
im considering doing a couple of bits to alter the look slightly although i dont want to do to much... ive fitted a set of mv2 alloys as i originally prefered these to the mv3s although if a set of mv3s come up i may change these again apart from the wheels im considering a couple of other exterior mods which some of which im unsure if they are possible... i would like to replace the dull original lights for some with the angle eyes if possible and would like the lights to be a nice bright white aswell although im not sure what units i can swap to achieve this or whether ill only be able to swap the bulbs due to wiring plugs or something??? any help on this would be appreciated apart from this the only other things im looking to do is debadge the rear purely to make it look smoother as i have no shame in my 320d lol a slight tint on the rear windows, change the number plate bulbs for again a brighter led option. if anyone could post up pictures of their 320ds if they have simular mods this would be appreciated especially the rear tinting as im still not sure about this thanks ross |

Right, where was I. See the other thread reference xenon lights. It's doable but hellishly expensive to do and still pass the new mot. The alternative, which I think I'm going to go for too when I can save the cash, is to fit LCI halogen lights and Philips Extreme Vision +100% bulbs. That way you get the cleaner, more modern look of the facelift lights as well as the brightness and the angel eyes. I like debadging, especially on the 320d. No offence to 320ds, I had one, but they are quite common and a bit reppy. Debadging isn't going to make people think you've got an m3, but I still like the idea. Makes the back end look cleaner too. With this, you might consider fitting a set of 6 cyl tailpipes. If you do, just make sure you fit them the right way round, rather than that ruin someone was trying to sell on here! Wheels wise, I like the mv2s too, but I think they suit the E46 more. I've always been a fan of mv3s. That said, if I had the cash, I'd buy BMW performance style 313s in a heartbeat!! Tints I'm not sure about as mine came with privacy glass. If you do it though, remember you can only do from the b-pillar backwards as the fronts are already factory tinted as much as the rules allow - plod are clamping down on this as its basically like driving with sunglasses on at night. Too dark on the rears and you're going to get the van look. A light smoke usually looks well. I think some people have experience of aftermarket tints that worked well in spite of the dimples on the edge of the glass. The only other things I might consider are black line rear lights, black grille, BMW performance splitters, boot lid spoiler etc.

Oh, and a remap is well worth it on the 320d. Ok it's not an exterior mod but done right actually increases fuel economy as well as the significant power gains.

Yup, get LCI halogens. Xenons will cost mega bucks as you will need washers and the auto leveling unit. Someone on here started doing it a while back and regretted it due to the amount of work and the costs. To get white halos on the LCIs you will need to replace the bulbs with some LEDs. There are lots available but most aren't that bright during daylight. Phillips diamond vision are good for the normal lights. I've tried Osram nightbreakers and Phillips Extreme vision and they were pretty yellow.
In terms of the number plate LEDs there are loads available on ebay for a couple of quid. Be sure to buy ones that only have 1 or 2 SMD LEDs. The enclosed units with about 14 LEDs are overkill and will make your number plate visible from the moon. No shame in debadging a 320. The old hairdryer and dental floss job is the best way. |

thanks for all the advice guys ive been extremely busy at work recently so no chance to do anything ive debadged the car simply because its looks cleaner not for performance gains lol ive got a 400bhp drift car that i compeat in so this car is not to try and gain any man points or pub talk its only to make it look clean
so far im pretty much decided that id like to change the front lights so ill look into the non bmw upgrades possible. also id like a subtle rear tint and the m sport kit im not to fussed about the exhaust but if one of the standard systems fit on and looks nice then maybe ill go for that thanks for all the advice and mega your car is stunning great work ross |
